Spurs travel to St. Mary's Stadium, Southampton for their second consecutive away fixture, anxious to gain three points before facing the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal in a tough April programme. The home side too will be desperate to regain some pride after their defeat at Portsmouth last week.
The last time these two sides met in March, Spurs enjoyed that 7-2 victory over a Glenn Hoddle-managed Southampton, in 2000. In fact, in the same season, we had our last away win against this opposition (at The Dell),by 1-0, thanks to a goal by Oyvind Leonhardsen. Spurs have only one player (Taricco) who played that day, and could play this week. He and Stephen Carr were the only two of the current squad who played in the 7-2 win. See the links above to read the match reports from those and other games mentioned in this preview.
Revenge must be very high on Spurs agenda for this match, as they have lost the last three games against this opposition, whose fans took great glee from the fact that the 3-1 defeat at White Hart Lane in September brought to an end Glenn Hoddle's reign as Spurs boss. It would have been an interesting day if Hoddle had taken the vacant position, before withdrawing his candidacy recently.
Saints have won just 2 of their last 12 league games, both of which were at home - to Leeds and Liverpool. They did win three consecutive games in early December (including games against Liverpool and Portsmouth), when they achieved their highest position of the season (4th). Having lost 6 and drawn 4 of those last 12 games, Saints have fallen below Spurs to 12th place, although of course, a home win on Saturday would soon rectify that situation!
For Spurs, team selection seems to be a dilemma, despite the availability of most of the squad. Simon Davies is likely to be missing, as is Dean Richards, but Jamie Redknapp could make his first Premiership start since the home game against Southampton in September. Fredi Kanoute (pictured above) was Spurs goalscorer in the last fixture, but may have to sit it out on the bench again, or will Mr. Pleat tinker with the formation and line-up again? Michael Svensson is also doubtful for the Saints, whose new manager has still to settle in, and get his team playing according to his style.
I fancy David Pleat to play an attacking line-up, which may include three strikers, and I am going to stick my neck out and predict a Spurs win - 2-1, which would give us our first win at the new Saints' stadium.
