Can Spurs break down the Brummies' resilience

Resilience is the word that comes to mind when describing Birmingham's season so far. Their 3-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night brought to an end a stubborn 12 match unbeaten run, which has carried the Blues into the "competing for Europe" arena. Birmingham's new owners apparently have £40 million to burn, but manager Alex McLeish has been quoted as saying he is not going to spend for the sake of it, having confidence in his squad. He has invested in Craig Gardner from local rivals Aston Villa, who could figure in tomorrow's game, but he has failed to match Spurs asking price for Roman Pavlyuchenko.

It would seem that Pavlyuchenko is on his way out from White Hart lane though, with Eidur Gudjohnsen's loan signing from Monaco confirmed today. I am not sure if Gudjohnsen's signing was completed in time for him to be eligible tomorrow, but of course Spurs have plenty of games to come.

Spurs will have to do without Aaron Lennon for at least another three weeks and Ledley King is hardly likely to play a second game in five days, so Sebastien Bassong will surely step in. Whether or not Niko Kranjcar remains ill, there is no reason why Spurs should not field an otherwise unchanged team from that which beat Fulham. David Bentley deserves another chance, after some good work, capped by a decent goal from a free kick.

Another of Birmingham's recent signings (before the recent window opened) was the loan of former Spur Teemu Tainio from Sunderland. However, guess what? Yes, poor old Teemu is injured. he hasn't played since November, but may be back in a week or so. Another ex-Spur, Stephen Carr has been almost ever-present in the Birmingham defence, and will shake off any baiting he gets from the visiting support.

Birmingham's resilience was very much evident at the start of the season, when they lost by a solitary goal at Old Trafford, then lost at White Hart Lane but only in the last minute to an Aaron Lennon goal.

No doubt the Birmingham programme will focus heavily upon our last visit to St. Andrews. This game came a week after we had beaten Chelsea in the Carling Cup Final, and it looked as if the players were still in the party mood. Birmingham beat us 4-1 and that was only thanks to a very late consolation goal by Jenas. It was the start of a severe downturn under the management of Juande Ramos, and we only managed three wins in our closing 12 Premier League games. We also got knocked out of the UEFA Cup thanks to a certain goalkeeper called Gomes!

I prefer to remember Spurs' one Premier League win at Birmingham, when Spurs were sitting in fourth place battling for a Champions League spot. Ultimately we were to fail on the last day, so let's make it this time, and get a win tomorrow!
