Should we feel sorry?

Spurs face Portsmouth tomorrow for possibly the last time in league competition for several years. It won't be our last meeting of the season though, because the match is a rehearsal for our FA Cup semi-final on April 11th. By one of those quirks of co-incidence that football throws up so oten, Chelsea and Aston Villa will also have such a rehearsal tomorrow afternoon.

Portsmouth's 7 year stay in the Premier League is surely over, even if not quite mathematically certain. They haven't got the great escape artist Harry Redknapp in charge any more, and our leader will of course be the focus for some venom from the visiting supporters, for his part in their ongoing tale of woe.

I'm not bright enough to give any analysis of the Portsmouth saga, but Redknapp (given the freedom of the City after winning them the FA Cup) won them promotion in his first spell; saved them from relegation in his second spell, and won them the FA Cup, which was their first piece of major silverware for over 50 years. It wasn't Harry's fault that Portsmouth's then owner allowed his manager to have all the toys (players) he wanted, was it?

Should we feel sorry for Portsmouth? Well personally I won't be sorry to see the back of their pre-war away facilites, which I've seen bettered at non-league stadia around the country. However, I do sincerely feel sorry for the loyal supporters of Pompey, whose enthusiasm for the game and their team remains undaunted, even in the face of such crises as they have endured this season. It does at least look as if they will have a club to follow next season. There will be no time for sympathy on the part of our players, especially the former Pompey contingent of Kaboul, Kranjcar, Crouch, and Defoe.

Jermain Defoe is still not available, but will surely be fit in a week or so, and definitely for the forthcoming FA Cup semi-final. The other three are all fit, and will probably start. Bearing in mind Corluka's absence, and the need for a late fitness test for Bassong, Kaboul could be needed at the back. Mind you, Wilson Palacios is also facing a late fitness test, but despite their injuries, Spurs might begin to hold him back to prevent that potential tenth booking keeping him out of the semi-final. Roman Pavlyuchenko also has a late fitness test, but having made such an impact on Wednesday night, and in just about every game he has played since February 21st at Wigan, super Pav must surely feature!

Should we feel sorry for Jamie O'Hara? The Spurs loanee will have to sit this one out, and sadly for him, will also have to sit out the semi-final, due to the terms of his loan. Jamie has been Portsmouth's player of the season, and has received wide acclaim. I personally understand Jamie's comments about the FA Cup, and his split allegiance, but most fans do not comprehend the way players think about their profession, and loyalty to a team. Jamie certainly has a future at Premier League level, but whether that will be at Spurs is another question. Just ask yourself how many of Spurs recent games would he have played in, despite our numerous injuries? Ironically, I think that maybe this game would have seen him start for Spurs had he been here, to allow that cover for Palacios. At the end of the day, all professional footballers just want to play, and Jamie might have to move on in the summer for the number of games he would like.

On top of all their woes, Portsmouth have a lengthy injury list, which includes former Spur Ricardo Rocha, who got a fractured cheek-bone in the home thrashing by Chelsea on Wednesday night. That list also includes Papa Bouba Diop, Belhadj, Tommy Smith, Yebda and another former Spurs man Kevin-Prince Boateng, who has also impressed Pompey fans over the course of the season. No doubt Michael Brown will be as tigerish as usual in the midfield against his old team.

One wonders what sort of team Portsmouth will have left then, but you can count on David James in goal for one. We all know that a wounded animal is dangerous, and not only are Portsmouth wounded, but they really have nothing to lose. As a team they are determined to win enough points to be able to say they'd have survived without the 9 point penalt for going into administration.

Spurs had better look out then. There is no time for sympathy or complacency. Three points is the target, and as many goals as possible would enhance our position. I don't think it will be anything like as easy as some might say, but I'll predict a 3-0 win for Spurs.
