Tricky Replay ahead as Cup opens up

Tricky replay ahead as Cup opens up

For Spurs fans the sight of Arsenal crashing out at Stoke will have provided some amusement after a frustrating match against Leeds.

In fact, Tottenham supporters should take a note of Stoke's rough and ready style as Leeds will provide another warm northern welcome in next week's replay, with a Yorkshire twist of course.

Spurs will have been well aware of the threat posed by Leeds going into their fourth round clash at White Hart Lane, their victory over Man United in round three was evidence enough of their resurgence under Simon Grayson.

And credit to Harry Redknapp's men they applied themselves well early on against the League One side, who clung on for dear life. Spurs could have easily been 4-0 up in the first half with Jermain Defoe's penalty and shots from Bale, Krancjar and Defoe all somehow kept out by Whites 'keeper Casper Ankergren.

Sometimes it is just one of those days and with those chances spurned Spurs recoiled back into their shell and allowed Leeds to play their way back into the match.

Despite that they were still on course for round five going into stoppage time, before man-of-the moment Jermaine Beckford burst into the box and was felled by Michael Dawson. His successful spotkick, in the 95th minute, has given Spurs a replay they didn't want, especially with the race for a Champions League place hotting up.

The failure to see out the game is even more frustrating given the state of the competition now. With three of the big four (who have hogged the famous old trophy for the past ten years) already disposed off, the competition - and the FA Cup betting - has really opened up. And with an away tie at struggling Bolton awaiting the winners of this game, a place in the last eight is a real possibility. From there anything can happen.

But thanks to Beckford's strike Spurs cannot afford to look any further than February 3rd and what is surely going to be a red hot atmosphere at Elland Road, as Leeds to continue their re-emergence and look to slay another Premier League giant. If Spurs take their eyes off the ball, there could be trouble.

But grab the win and the long road to Wembley is already looking clearer. Currently, Spurs' FA Cup odds make them fourth favourites to lift the trophy, and their price will fall further if they win their replay.
