3pm Saturday? That can't be right!

Here we are in December, playing our fifteenth league game of the season, and our eighth at home, and it's our first home Saturday 3 o'clock kick-off! Remember the days when it was the norm? In Spurs' case, of course, Europa League football usually prevents us from playing on a Saturday, and you won't be surprised by the figures released this week which confirmed we had played the most games on a Sunday in the last two years, and the lowest number of traditional Saturday 3pm games.

The last time we played Palace was one of those rare occasions, played on January 11th. We had an early scare when referee Michael Oliver awarded a penalty against Dembele for a foul on Chamakh, but Puncheon scooped an apalling spot kick over the target. Spurs went on to win 2-0 with second half goals by Christian Eriksen, and Jermain Defoe, who scored his last goal for Spurs in almost his last appearance.

Another great (the greatest!) Spurs goalscorer, Jimmy Greaves, played his last first team game for us at Crystal Palace in January 1970 in an FA Cup game which we lost and after which Bill Nicholson famously dropped four senior players, including Greaves. Greaves had scored his last senior goal for Spurs at home to Derby earlier that month.

Palace were in the bottom three when they came to The Lane in January, but Tony Pulis had taken over from Ian Holloway, and memorably led the South London side on a charge up the table, where they finished in 11th place. Pulis mysteriously parted with the club in the summer, and Neil Warnock returned for his second spell in charge at Selhurst Park, and his tenth managerial appointment.

Once again, Palace are at the wrong end of the table, but they've consistently made it difficult for the bigger clubs, beating Everton away, and Liverpool at home, getting their only other win at home to Leicester. Palace lost by only one goal at Arsenal, Old Trafford and at home to Chelsea. We can expect another tough home game.

It is important for Spurs to reap as many points as possible before we meet Chelsea again on New Year's Day. Before then we have "winnable" games at home to Palace and Burnley and away to Leicester. The trip to Swansea and home match against Manchester United at the end of the month will be more formidable, but if we couldd gather 10 or 11 more points before the turn of the year, we'd at least be feeling comfortable about the rest of the league season. Our focus, after all, is going to have to be on the Cup competitions.

There is no specific team news ahead of the game regarding Spurs. Kyle Naughton will surely be pressing for his right back position after suspension. He was available for the Chelsea game, but un-used on the bench. We are still waiting for Emmanuel Adebayor to feature in the team for the first time since our home defeat against Stoke.

Maybe Pochettino will play the team which beat Everton last Sunday. Certainly a similar performance will be required to get the desired win, which I expect, by 2-0.

Tomorrow's match referee is Lee Mason. He was last in charge of Spurs when we beat Sunderland 5-1 in April. A similar result would be most welcome!
