Can Spurs shake Martinez?

Two teams who top their respective Europa League groups meet in tomorrow's 4pm clash, being shown live on Sky Sports. Everton have had a strong campaign in Europe, and on Thursday beat Wolfsburg, who are currently second in the Bundesliga behind only Bayern Munich. They are also the other likely qualifiers from Everton's group.

Everton won 2-0. Their first goal was by their top league goalscorer, Romelu Lukaku, who they signed permanently in the summer, after he had spent last season on loan from Chelsea. Lukaku is in top form, having scored five goals for club and country in his last 9 games. He has scored 5 league goals, plus the breakaway goal in Germany the other night. Kevin Mirallas scored the other goal, and he too is in scoring form for his club, with four goals in his last 8 appearances.

Everton have already secured top place in their Group, whilst Spurs need a draw in Turkey on December 11th to hold onto their top spot.

Roberto Martinez has tended to play a strong side in the Europa League, and recent Premier League form has certainly not suffered. They had a slow start, but have crept up the table steadily. The two sides are level on points going into this game. Everton must fancy their chances against a team which has lost four of its first six home games this season. That's more home defeats than any other Premier League side going into the week-end's fixtures.

The bad news for Spurs is that Everton could feature several players returning from injury, with Naismith (also chipping in with a few goals), Pienaar, Gareth Barry and Leighton Baines all possibly returning. James McCarthy's hamstring injury will be assessed. Definite absentees will be young defender John Stones, and squad players Darron Gibson and Bryan Oviedo.

Samuel Eto'o has been a very useful acquisition for Martinez - also from Chelsea. Eto'o is now 33, and has played and scored against Spurs when at Inter, and last season with Chelsea. Eto'o scored two goals in Inter's 4-3 Champions League 2010 home win against a Spurs side who were inspired by Bale's hat-trick. Eto'o also scored Inter's solitary goal at White Hart Lane, when we won 3-1 on a famous night at The Lane. Last season, he scored when Chelsea beat us 4-0 at Stamford Bridge in March.

Spurs have plenty of injury problems, with Kaboul, Rose, Chadli, Capoue and Adebayor only just back in training, and all perhaps doubtful for tomorrow. Townsend also remains doubtful. Kyle Naughton will have to sit this one out to complete his two-match suspension, whilst Fazio is once again eligible.

Both clubs seem to be playing their selection cards close to their chest. Harry Kane might even have been protected for this game on Thursday night. Most of Kane's 11 goals this season have been outside the Premier League, but that is more than any other English Premier Leagaue player has managed so far in all competitions. Christian Eriksen was an unused substitute against Partizan, and will start tomorrow.

If Mauricio Pochettino can play Eriksen towards the back of his midfield, as happened at Hull last week, then perhaps the team could produce a winning performance.

Can Martinez be shaken tomorrow? That's not likely, as he is a cool un-flustered character. I hope to be stirred by my team though. The Spurs crowd are desperate for a win and some entertainment. Perhaps rashly, I am predicting a 2-1 win for Spurs against a club from whom we have won more points that against any other Premier League team.

If you are looking for omens, then last season's home win was also preceded by an away match against Hull City.

Tomorrow's match referee is Michael Oliver, who was in charge of another tough Spurs game this season, when we drew 1-1 at The Emirates Stadium.
