Spurs played their second home game of the season at White Hart Lane, having beaten West Ham at Stevenage in their first game. The game attracted a good sized crowd including the 1882 choir at the North end of the West stand. The visitors came here having also beaten West Ham in their last game at the Boleyn ground.

Spurs lined up with McGee in goal behind Veljkovic and Ball with McQueen at right back and Walker-Peters on the left. Winks anchored the midfield with Mason and Onomah in support of Akindayini flanked by Sonupe and Oduwa.

Spurs defended the Park Lane in the first half but clicked into gear very quickly attacking at pace with quick passing and running using the width of the pitch. Onomah drew the first save in the third minute and Spurs won their first corner a minute later when McQueen's cross was put behind. Oduwa pulled the ball back for McQueen to fire wide as Spurs kept the pressure on the "Saints" defence.

Akindayini played the ball out to Oduwa on the left who tried a shot from a tight angle, but it flew over. Oduwa combined with McQueen again for the full back to shoot wide once more. Walker-Peters got down the right and pulled the ball back for Mason to fire over. Following another corner Mason again fired over, before he did manage to find the net. Onomah picked up a knock-down by Akindayini to play the ball out to Oduwa who cut inside and laid it off to Mason, who this time kept the ball down to score to the keeper's left.

The joy was short-lived as Southampton broke down the right, where Rowe and Niall Mason combined to whip the ball into the near post where Seager got across McGee to turn it in.

It only took Spurs four minutes to regain the lead when good work down the right saw Sonupe fouled by Debayo in the area to win a penalty. Sonupe took the spot kick himself and sent Cropper the wrong way placing the ball inside the right post.

Winks was booked after Rowe had muscled him off the ball and the Spurs midfielder pulled back his opponent. Rowe took the free kick, hitting it well over the bar. Seager fired wide before Akindayini was released by Onomah to fire wide for a corner. Akindayini was also off target from Oduwa's pass.

The visitors had another turnover that saw Willard get down the right to cross for Seager to head. McGee tipped his dipping header over the bar. Flannigan was booked for impeding McGee following the corner to prevent him from releasing the ball quickly. McGee saved from Willard just before half-time to allow Spurs to go in ahead.

There were no changes for the second half as Spurs continued to be the better team. Following another Southampton dead ball delivery McGee was again impeded, this time by Seager who was also booked. McQueen got down the left but saw his effort diverted over the bar for a corner.

While Wood was having treatment, Spurs made their first change, replacing Mason with Lameiras while the visitors sent on Regis, who is a large unit and seemed to be told put his weight about in midfield to combat the home midfield. When play re-started Spurs did not give the ball back to the visitors and Rowe was booked for a foul on Walker-Peters as he made the point clear.

Lesniak replaced Winks in the anchor position as Spurs refreshed the midfield. Oduwa made a run down the left from his own half on a counter attack. Oduwa was chased by Hesketh all the way' until he pulled him down to go into the ref's book.

McGee saved Flannigan's free kick which was heading for the top corner turning it around the post for a corner from which Wood headed wide. Spurs got a third goal when McQueen started a move on the left, passing forward to Oduwa. Oduwa opened his long legs to attack through the left channel, playing in Akindayini to score across the keeper into the far corner.

Lameiras cut in from the left to fire wide before Sonupe was replaced by Miller and the Portuguese midfielder was moved to the right side. McGee saved from Sims at the second attempt before Southampton pulled a goal back. They won the ball on the left and Flannigan advanced quickly before crossing to Seager coming in at the far post to score.

Lesniak and Oduwa worked the ball down the left before Akindayini took the ball off Lesniak's toes to fire over. Sims fired wide for a corner. after which Spurs made a break through Miller who was fouled by McCarthy in the centre circle earning the big defender a yellow card. Lameiras fired over and Onomah drew a save in added time before Lameiras was caught in possession and was booked for a foul.

This was a good result from Spurs who will not be happy about conceding twice when they had so much control of the game. The passing was quick and crisp and at a pace that left Southampton players in their wake. Sonupe and Oduwa combined well with their full backs, threatening the visitors' defence the whole time with Wood being treated for cramp halfway through the second half. Southampton got into the game during the second half when they began to win the ball in midfield having introduced Regis.

Spurs now have two wins from two games, as do Chelsea. Liverpool top the Division with seven points from three games having beaten West Ham 4-0 this evening. Spurs travel north to play Sunderland on the 22nd September. The game was supposed to have been held at the Stadium of Light but has now been moved to the Heddon Centre at Houghton-le-Spring.
