Spurs' confidence could not be higher

Spurs travel to The Etihad Stadium Manchester on Saturday with confidence levels justifiably at the highest level for a key "top six mini-league" fixture. Almost nothing but good news emanates from the portals of White Hart Lane and the Hotspur Way training ground, with Jan Vertonghen's injury sustained against West Brom last week the only negative story for Mauricio Pochettino.

Spurs are on a roll of six consecutive Premier League wins, one of which was against title favourites Chelsea. They've scored 4 goals in three of their last four league games. Harry Kane and Dele Alli are in tip-top form scoring 12 of spurs' last 14 premier league goals between them. Whilst Spurs might not be favourites, there will be good odds to be found on some of the best gambling websites. Spurs' confidence will only be enhanced by their recent record against Manchester City, despite the money at their disposal and their summer recruitment of Pep Guardiola.

Spurs have won their last three games against City, and they've all been sensational games. It's the first time we've won three on the trot against City since 2008-2010, when we actually won four consecutive games. The final game in that sequence was the night we beat City to Champions League qualification when Peter Crouch scored our winner. Crouch is getting close to his 100th premier League goal now, and he's getting games again with Stoke, but Peter regularly tweets about his fond memories of his time with Spurs as a senior player, during which we first qualified for The Champions League.

There was a fallow period for Spurs against City after May 2010 of only one win in 10 games, and some of those defeats included some horrible scorelines when City were truly rampant. Despite that, we can still refer to our third best Premier League points record against long(ish) serving Premier League teams with an average of 1.89 points per game against City. We've only done better against Sunderland (2.19) and Everton (2.15) of those teams currently in the top flight and who we have met at least 20 times.

Last year's away game was played on Valentine's Day, and it certainly led to a love-in towards the Spurs players by the travelling fans! We went into the game in second place, as we do this week-end (at least before the earlier games). City were one point behind us with 47. We had 48 points from 25 games, which is a tally we will surely beat in the next two or three games. Leaders Leicester had come away from The Etihad the previous week with all three points, but they had lost to a last minute Welbeck goal earlier on this Sunday afternoon. Anything less than a win would have left Spurs below their local rivals.

Mark Clattenburg awarded Spurs what was regarded as a controversial penalty for a handball offence against Sterling, but Harry Kane planted his kick past Joe Hart. Substitute Iheanacho equalised with a shot off the underside of the bar before birthday boy Christian Eriksen took the spoils after a fine through ball by substitute Erik Lamela. Spurs re-claimed second place and would continue the pursuit of Leicester. Incidentally, it remains a fact that Leicester could yet emulate Manchester City by being relegated one year after winning the League. It happened to Manchester City in 1938!

Erik Lamela played in our exciting home win over City in October, but will still be missing this week. The 2-0 win over Guardiola's City came courtesy of a Kolarov own goal, and a fine finish by Dele Alli, scoring only his second goal of the season after Son's pass. Spurs' effort and pressure on City had been relentless throughout the first half and the win announced us as contenders, a status we have more than confirmed with our recent results.

Pep Guardiola's almost messianic status as a manager who would lead City onto great things has taken plenty of knocks this season. Last week's 4-0 defeat by Everton was the biggest defeat the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss has suffered in management. Bad news seems to have followed Guardiola throughout the season, and perhaps the English press knives were out for him at the start when he discarded Joe Hart in favour of Claudio Bravo, whose only clean sheets in his last 11 domestic games have been against Watford at home, and away to Hull. Vincent Kompany continues to be plagued by injury, but may feature on Saturday. Fernandinho got his third red card (second in Premier League) in six games and will still be suspended this week. City's full backs are getting old for this level, and centre-back Otamendi often fails to impress. John Stones is surely still finding his feet. Bacary Sagna was this week fined £40,000 for derogatory social media comments. No wonder Pep has sometimes been uncomfortable at post-match interviews!

Regarding Bravo, in four of City's last seven Premier League games, the goalkeeper has conceded from the opposition's first effort on target. He has also conceded 14 goals from the last 22 shots on target faced. He is a definite weak link, but not the only frailty in City's defence.

Of course, City will benefit from the majority of a 55,000 crowd baying for their team to bounce back from last week's embarrassing defeat at Goodison Park, and there is no question that City can still be rampant going forward with the likes of De Bruyne, Silva, Sterling and Aguero in the front four.

We go into this game three points and goal difference better than City. Whatever happens on Saturday we will remain in the top four. There is no question that Spurs will have to be a their best to gain anything out of this game. However, do you know what? Spurs are at their best, and I fancy we could once again leave the Etihad with all three points. I'll go with a 2-1 for Spurs!

Last season, both our matches against City were refereed by Mark Clattenburg. Guess what! This Saturday our referee will be Andre Marriner, who also refereed our home game this season. Spooky, or what?

Please note that due to personal circumstances, this preview is posted earlier than usual, and before any official team news. I do intend to offer the usual post-match survey and report.
