John Ellis's "third eye" report on Spurs v Brighton, 13.12.17

John Ellis is known to many Spurs fans and we have over 450 mutual friends on Facebook. I am pleased to add this "third eye" feature article written by "El Gringo". This time John offers his thoughts on our 2-0 League win over Brighton.

John invariably comments after every Spurs game on his Facebook page, and I usually agree with everything he writes. That applies to John's detailed eye-witness report on this game, which is published below, with kind permission:-

Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 Brighton and Hove Albion

Saturday morning, Spurs were languishing in sixth some four points off a top four place and with a much worse goal difference. What a difference a few days can make!

Last night after the entertaining five goal performance of Saturday, Spurs rather laboured to a two goal win over a defensive minded Brighton. However grinding out a victory is a good sign and one which became even more important given the way events unfolded at Anfield and the Olympic Stadium with Spurs now leap-frogging back into the top four.

In front of 46,438, our lowest home Premier League crowd, it wasn't the best of performances and those who chose not to brave the cold weather will probably feel justified in staying at home. The game started in the slow ponderous style we have sadly come to expect and other than for the odd spell continued throughout with Spurs in second gear for most of the night. The match wasn't helped by an ultra cautious Brighton side who even after our fortuitous opening goal rarely came out to play.

Other than sporadic forays into our half such as a mazy run in the opening stages which was allowed to go on and on and on and ended with a cross followed by a shot high over the bar in the first half, and a shot straight at Lloris in the second half they offered very little in terms of an attacking threat.

Spurs dominated possession but seemed to flounder in front of a packed defence. We do seem to play better when the opposition comes on to us which will certainly happen on Saturday. Let's hope we can demonstrate again just how good we are in such circumstances!

As has been the recent vogue, the opposition began to waste time from the early stages of the match. It is becoming a blight on the game which the authorities need to quickly stamp out. The only way to counter this is to take an early lead. Spurs needed to take their early chances but Kane was denied twice in quick succession and Son blazed over in front of goal. As half time approached, Spurs were struggling to fashion that elusive first goal and the frustrations of the fans were beginning to spill down onto the Wembley pitch.

When it came, the game changer was from the most unlikely of sources and through the most unusual of circumstances! As Aurier looked to pump a cross into the box from the far right touchline, a Brighton player barged into him just as he released his cross. The ball swirled off its intended trajectory, high into the air and finally looped into the top left hand corner of the net for the most fortuitous but most welcome of goals a la Kane's first of the season at Everton!

From there on after, cries of shoot went up every time Aurier received the ball in the opposition half! More worrying though was the way in which he dived in on a couple of occasions and didn't win the ball which sprang the Brighton player unnecessarily free down the wing.

Spurs started the second half in what can only be described as a careless manner which was exemplified by Kane missing a good chance in the 50th minute which Son followed up but couldn't convert either although in any event was deemed offside. Following howls of derision at another backwards pass, Pochettino turned to the fans and urged them to cheer the team on. It was that sort of night.

The game was meandering towards the final whistle but... would there be a sting in the tail as suffered versus Burnley? One goal leads always leave a team vulnerable don't they Mr Klopp! The anxiety in the crowd was growing and Kane's 84th minute free kick shot against the post did nothing to quell the nerves. The safety of a second goal continued to elude us.

With three minutes to go, the tension finally lifted. A free kick on the right was superbly headed into the net by Son. It was Gilzeanesque in style, reminiscent of the old master and first anointed King of White Hart Lane. As Son seems to be doing every game, he lit up the night and his goal was probably deserving of a bigger stage.

It was quite surreal to see but by the time the team had trotted back to the halfway line for the restart, just like a flock of birds leaving a telegraph line in unison, what felt like the whole stadium stood up as one and headed towards the exit. Regularly seen this when a team concedes but never when a team scores!

The major positive drawn from the game was Lamela starting his first game for well over a year. Although not always on quite on the same wave length as his colleagues, he was full of energy and enterprise - none more so than his first half high press which led to a shot on goal.

Danny Rose is looking a little more of a concern. He has shed most of his excess pounds but appears to have lost a yard of pace. There were a few occasions last night when Brighton players gave him a head start and still outran him. I wonder if this is manifesting in him showing his frustrations again as in the second half when getting into an unnecessary spat. Let's hope he makes a full recovery because in also having lost Walker, we look a pale shadow of recent times when trying to attack with pace down the flanks.

As the final whistle blew we waited for the inevitable last minute goals by Liverpool and Arsenal but lo an behold they didn't come ??. We know only too well what a frustrating evening the Liverpool players and fans will have endured with West Brom's spoiling tactics!

And so we move on to two very difficult crucial away games after which we could be anywhere between third and seventh in the table! After three successive home wins, we travel to Manchester in good heart.
