A Look at the Top 5 Tottenham Scorers Throughout the Years

A Look at the Top 5 Tottenham Scorers Throughout the Years

Spurs are one of the most respected teams in the history of English professional football and much of that respect is owed to the Club’s players. Out of the many players who’ve proudly served Tottenham, the ones that many Spurs fans remember the dearest are the goal-scorers who have given the supporters many exciting moments to obsess about. To honour these athletes, here's a short retrospective of the top 5 Tottenham goal-scorers of all time.

#5 - Jermain Defoe

One of the few players from recent history to enter the club's top 10 goalscorer list, Jermain Defoe has certainly done plenty to deserve his place among the greats. He first entered the Spurs' top 10 list in 2012 with his 118th goal before arriving at the 5th spot by the end of 2014 with 143 goals in 363 appearances. He continued being a good performer in his subsequent career and also became a media favourite thanks to his friendship with the late Bradley Lowery.

#4 - Cliff Jones

A Welsh Legend, Cliff Jones was there during one of Tottenham's most memorable achievements - winning the double in 1961. A fan favourite, Cliff Jones also played when Spurs won the FA Cup and the European Cup Winners’ Cup in the following years. While playing for the Club during 1958-68, he scored 159 goals in 378 appearances, earning the fourth spot on the team's top 10 goalscorer list.

#3 - Martin Chivers

Though his first days with the Spurs weren't a major success, Martin Chivers eventually became one of the most important scorers for Tottenham. Initially seen as a lazy player, Chivers had a breakthrough in 1970 when he played in 58 games, scoring 34 times. By the end of his time with Tottenham, he earned the number 3 spot with 174 goals scored in 367 appearances for the team.

#2 - Bobby Smith

One of the most prolific centre-forwards in English football history, Bobby Smith is one of the most well-known Tottenham hall-of-famers. Throughout his illustrious football career, he played 15 times for the national team and also played when Tottenham took home the first double FA Cup and League win in 1961, where he scored in the final of the Cup.

While playing for the Spurs, Smith scored 208 times in 317 appearances and earned the number 2 position on the list. Apart from his Tottenham glory, some also remember him for his post-career hardships. Reportedly, his visits to gambling shops in a time before they began introducing games like Slot Machines and Roulette were, sadly, not that uncommon.

#1 Jimmy Greaves

A legendary goalscorer, Jimmy Greaves is one of the most well-known names in Tottenham's history remembered by many for his pace, acceleration, and dribbling abilities. During 379 appearances for the team, he scored 266 goals during 1961-70, earning the number 1 spot, and yet to be overtaken. But with Harry Kane targeting his record, we might just see that change in the upcoming years.
