The Spurs Stars Most Likely To Lift The World Cup
The season is far from over for Spurs but following the recent internationals, some players will certainly be eyeing their chances for a World Cup winning summer.
A few members of the squad not only are guaranteed selection for the summer but have a real good chance of lifting the trophy.
While the likes of Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Eric Dier have a little less hope, these players certainly do have half a chance…
Hugo Lloris - France
Lloris is the captain of his country and the French go into the tournament as third favourites to win it.
Lloris will play a key role not only in the goal but as a presence. The 31-year-old is one of France’s most experienced figures and alongside Paul Pogba, N’Golo Kante and Raphael Varane will provide a solid spine.
Moussa Sissoko also has a chance of making the squad. He was left out for the recent friendlies but a strong finish to the season could see him on Didier Deschamps’ shortlist.
Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen, Moussa Dembélé - Belgium
The Belgian trio at Spurs will be desperately hopeful to make amends for their defeat to Wales at Euro 2016.
All three are virtually guaranteed a spot in Roberto Martinez’s squad and will join a host of in-form of starts for the tournament.
They’re certainly in most World Cup tips for most pundits after a strong domestic season for most players, whether they can bring it all together and create a strong team spirit is a different story. If Martínez can find harmony, they have a great chance.
Davinson Sanchez - Colombia
Davinson Sánchez is relatively new to the international fold and could be once again in with a real chance of going far in the tournament.
The Colombians came from behind to beat the French recently which is a real statement of intent and in Sanchez they have a strong centre back.
The confidence in Sanchez will allow the likes of James Rodriguez and Radamel Falcao to attack with freedom. That could see them go far with Falcao finding his very best scoring form once again. A team to keep an eye on for sure.
Érik Lamela - Argentina
The World Cup always throws up speculation as to whether this is Lionel Messi’s year. The Argentinians got to the final back in 2014 and are 8/1 to win it this time around.
Érik Lamela is playing well for Spurs and will be an outsider to make the squad, with the player hitting a bit of form for his club.
He didn’t make the recent squad for friendlies, but Pochettino believes he’s nearly back to his best and that could see him make it to Russia.
Other Notable Players:
Of course, Kane, Alli, Dier and Kieran Trippier will be hoping to upset the odds with the Three Lions, however you’d have to be brave to back England to go all the way.
The same applies to Christian Eriksen. If it wasn’t for the talismanic midfielder, Denmark wouldn’t even be at the tournament so it will likely be a step too far for his nation and we expect a group knockout.
Lucas Moura seems cut adrift from the Brazil squad at the moment but he’ll be hoping not to be snubbed this summer. He’s 36 caps for his nation and it’ll likely depend on how he plays between now and May.
