Anything from this game would be a bonus

I am very grateful to my very good friend Declan Mulcahy has provided the following preview

Up to and including last Wednesday’s match the total number of matches between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City in all competitions is as follows:

 P W D L F - A
158 61 35 62	219-246
These matches have taken place at seven different venues as follows:

Hyde Road (1911-1923)
Maine Road (1924-2003)
Etihad Stadium (2003-2019)
White Hart Lane (1911-2017)
Wembley (1981, 2017-2018)
Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (2019)
Villa Park (1956)

The first three are the stadia where City have played their home matches over the last century.

The teams have met on four occasions or more during the following seasons

1980-81 four times
1992-93 four times
2003-04 five times
2018-19 three times so far with a fourth match to come

In 1992-93 Spurs won all four matches. City have never won more than twice in a season so a defeat on Saturday would be the first time that City had beaten Spurs three times in a season.

During the famous double season 1960-61 Manchester City came to White Hart Lane on Monday 10 October 1960 and drew 1-1. This ended a run of 13 consecutive wins consisting of the last two league matches of the 1959-60 season and the first eleven matches (all in the league) of the 1960-61 season.

There were however extenuating circumstances. The match was originally scheduled for Saturday 8 October 1960. However England played Northern Ireland that day in Belfast in the Home International Championship. Danny Blanchflower appeared for Northern Ireland and Bobby Smith for England in that match. Travel allowances were not generous in those days and both players would likely have travelled to and from Belfast by train and boat. So in the course of three days they also played two full 90 minute matches -there were no substitutes in those days – and travelled back from Belfast. City meanwhile had no players involved in the international match.

Given that Blanchflower and Smith were two key players in the Spurs XI and had a very demanding schedule over a short period of time it is perhaps not surprising that Manchester City were the first team to take points from Spurs that season.

In May 1981 Spurs played Manchester City in the 100th FA Cup Final at Wembley. The initial match was a run-of-the-mill affair. Perhaps the most notable feature was although the match ended in a 1-1 draw there was only one goal scorer Tommy Hutchison of Manchester City who scored for both sides. He deflected Hoddle’s shot into his own net following an Ardiles free kick. The match was particularly disappointing for Ricky Villa who was replaced after 68 minutes.

The replay was a memorable match. Villa gave Spurs the lead after 8 minutes. City were level three minutes later through Mackenzie. Reeves gave City the lead early in the second half from a penalty. Crooks levelled the game for Spurs after 70 minutes. Six minutes later Villa won the match with a goal which will be long remembered. He went of a brilliant solo run beating a number of City players and won the cup for Spurs with one of the best goals ever seen in an FA Cup final.

In May 2010 Spurs played Manchester City in the second last match of the season at the Etihad Stadium. The outcome would determine which team finished fourth in the league and qualified for the Champions League. Spurs scored the only goal in the 82nd minute from a Peter Crouch header and qualified for the Champions League for the first time.

A year later the situation was repeated at the Etihad in the third last match of the season. City in fourth place led Spurs in sixth place by six points. Spurs needed to win the match to have any chance of qualifying for the Champions League. City had boosted their squad since the previous season with big name signings such as Yaya Toure, David Silva and Edin Dzeko. Once again the score was 1-0 and Peter Crouch scored the only goal. Alas it was an own goal after 30 minutes when he deflected Milner’s cross following a corner into his own net.

This defeat ended Spurs Champions League hopes that season.

The first leg of the Champions League match ten days ago created a new piece of history for Spurs. After 12 minutes Hugo Lloris saved a penalty from Sergio Aguero. This was the first penalty to be saved at the new stadium.

It was the fourth time that Spurs had met an English team in a European competition. The first three occasions happened during the first decade of Spurs’ experiences in Europe. In 1963-64 Spurs lost to Manchester United in the opening tie following their successful Cup Winners Cup campaign the previous season.

In 1971-72 the first year that the UEFA Cup had been known by that name Spurs overcame Wolves in a two-legged final. A year later they were beaten by Liverpool when their defence of the trophy reached the semi final stage.

The Manchester City Champions League tie was the sixth time that the outcome of a Spurs European tie had been determined by away goals. The five previous times were as follows:

1967-68 v Olympique Lyonnais 0-1; 4-3 Lyonnais won on away goals
1972-73 v Vitoria Setubal 1-0; 1-2 Spurs won on away goals
1972-73 v Liverpool 0-1, 2-1 Liverpool won on away goals
1983-84 v Hajduk Split 1-2, 1-0 Spurs won on away goals
2012-13 v Inter Milan 3-0, 1-4 Spurs won on away goals

Spurs have won four times and lost twice when away goals are used to determine the outcome.

This week's epic City tie will probably rate a mention in the early history of VAR since there were three interventions which determined the eventual outcome of the tie.

And so to the league confrontation between the two teams on Saturday. The destiny of the league championship is between Liverpool and Manchester City. Liverpool have four matches remaining all against lower placed teams. They could well win all four and end up with 97 points.

Manchester City currently have 83 points with five matches remaining.

Three are against lower placed teams but they first have to confront Spurs at the Etihad and Manchester United at Old Trafford.

If Liverpool win their last four matches City must win all five. Thus Saturday’s match against Spurs is a must win game if City are to retain control of their destiny.

Spurs situation is different. They currently lead a group of four teams contending for the remaining two Champions League places. After City on Saturday Spurs have four matches remaining against lower league teams three at home and one away and are all winnable if the team can reproduce its best form. Arsenal-the first of the other contenders-have five matches remaining none against top six teams. However three of them are away and their away form is inconsistent.

The two remaining teams are Chelsea and Manchester United who have to play each other and United have to play their local rivals Manchester City.

It is quite likely that all four teams will drop points and if Spurs drop them against City but win the remaining four league matches they should qualify for the Champions League.

So Saturday’s match is a must win for City while Spurs can lose and still achieve their objective. When you take into account that City also have home advantage I’m inclined to think they will probably win. However even if they do, I won’t be too concerned providing they don’t win by more than two goals since I think Spurs will still be well-placed to finish in the top four and qualify for the Champions League.

The remainder of the season is going to be very exciting for Spurs supporters given the possibility of qualifying for the Champions League again and reaching the final this season with four more home matches at the wonderful new stadium. Both objectives are attainable if cool heads prevail and the team plays to its strengths. My only concern is the present injury list of midfield players and the possibility of any further injuries occurring.

Thanks so much to Declan for this incredibly detailed preview of tomorrow's game. I agree with his views regarding the possible result of this game and outcome of the remainder of the league season for Spurs. With Moussa Sissoko added to the injury list, along with Harry Kane, Serge Aurier, and Harry Winks, the Spurs team news is improved by the fact that Eric Dier has returned to training, and will hopefully be available tomorrow. Sissoko and Erik Lamela are in fact to be assessed. Lamela had originally been named as one of the subs for Wednesday night's game, but apparently pulled out at the last minute with this latest hamstring injury.

It will be interesting to see how City's players react to their Champions League exit. Fernandinho is likely to start, and there will no doubt be other changes to the City side, with a Manchester Derby on the midweek horizon.

Tomorrow's match referee will be Michael Oliver. It's his fourth Spurs game of the season. The high profile matches have been Liverpool at home (lost 2-1), and Chelsea in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg (won 1-0). Mr Oliver's last game with Spurs was a 3-1 home win against Leicester which included a penalty award, when Lloris saved from Vardy. That was the first of three consecutive penalty saves by Hugo this season.

· "It was Twenty Years ago today!" - On this day in 1999, Spurs beat Charlton 4-1 away from home.
