Ace statistician, and good friend of Spurs Odyssey, Declan Mulcahy quickly came up with the following list of similarly bad results in Spurs' recent history:-
Nov 1996 Bolton 6 Spurs 1 (League Cup -
Bolton a division below)
Dec 1996 Newcastle 7 Spurs 1
Dec 1997 Spurs 1 Chelsea 6
Dec 1999 Newcastle 6 Spurs 1 (FA Cup)
Mar 2002 Man Utd 4 Spurs 0
Mar 2002 Spurs 0 Chelsea 4 (FA Cup)
Mar 2002 Chelsea 4 Spurs 0 (3 times in 8 days!)
Jan 2003 Southampton 4 Spurs 0 (FA Cup)
May 2003 Middlesbrough 5 Spurs 1
May 2003 Spurs 0 Blackburn 4 (Two weeks in a row!)
Bearing in mind Spurs have played 25 games, I thought it would be of interest to check Spurs standing at the same stage in recent seasons, together with their final position:-
2005-6 Played 25 Pts 44 Pos 4th Finished 5th
2004-5 Played 25 Pts 33 Pos 9th Finished 9th
2003-4 Played 25 Pts 33 Pos 11th Finished 14th
2002-3 Played 25 Pts 38 Pos 8th Finished 10th
2001-2 Played 25 Pts 32 Pos 9th Finished 9th
Thus Spurs have returned to type, after a blip of improvement last year. The statistics of recent seasons indicate that we will not achieve European qualification via the Premiership, even if such qualification is available for 7th place. We really do have to concentrate on the cups!
Spurs Odyssey publishes a Premiership review on a week-by-week basis, enabling the monitoring of Spurs form over the last 5 seasons. All you need to do is to check out the recent stories linked on the left hand side of most pages on the website.
