April/May 2006

Spurs' purple patch of the season ran from the 4-0 away victory over Fulham in the FA Cup 5th Round, and came to an end at half-time at Stamford Bridge on March 11th. Despite ultimate defeat in the FA Cup, Spurs European hopes ran into April, but the level of conviction in our performances and results has not reached the same levels as the previous two months.

Robbie Keane has without a doubt been our player of the month, scoring 7 goals in the 6 games he played during that period. Robbie has scored 15 goals this year so far, and now matches Dimitar Berbatov goal for goal in both Premiership and overall totals.

It was a Keane penalty that gave us the three points at home to Reading, and of course his early goal in Spain gave us hope against Sevilla, where we suffered at the hands of a dodgy penalty as well as the over-enthusiastic police. The second leg is best forgotten, as Spurs gave themselves too much to do after that two goal deficit at the start of the game.

The level of skill shown at Middlesbrough was encouraging enough to make me believe that Spurs can succeed in the fight for a UEFA Cup place, and as reported elsewhere there is reason to believe that they will finish fifth.

Ledley King appears to be getting back to his best and a good level of fitness, and today (May 2nd), we were told that Teemu Tainio is back in training to hopefully play a part in the three-match conclusion to our 59 match season. Anthony Gardner and Benoit Assou-Ekotto also have hopes of a return to fitness.

So, it should be all systems go next week, starting at The Valley, and if you ask me whether Spurs will stride or stumble over the qualifying line, I'll say the former, but with our lack of clean sheets, it will not be without tense moments!
