Lucas has energised Spurs!

The season is only three games old so far, but it has all been first class for Spurs, who have won their first three games for only the fifth time in their history. The last occasion was in 2009 under manager Harry Redknapp. On that occasion we won our first four Premier League games (Liverpool, Hull, West Ham and Birmingham) with a 5-1 League Cup win at Doncaster thrown in. There was no European football for us that year, and that was the last season that happened as well.

With a top of the table clash at Watford to come on Sunday it would be a very welcome fourth win of the season. We are currently on a run of five consecutive wins including our last two games last season. Another occasion when we won our first three games was of course the famous Double season of 1960-61, and already after our marvellous 3-0 win at Old Trafford we are being spoken of as genuine title contenders this season. There is a long, long road ahead yet!

Talking of the Old Trafford win, that was our first clean sheet there since January 2005 and we all know what really happened that day, when the official result was 0-0!

We won our first game at Newcastle (for a second successive season) in which Jan Vertonghen officially got on the Premier League scoresheet for Tottenham since he scored against Swansea in March 2013. Jan had “goals” ticked off as own goals at Sunderland (January 2015), and more famously in one of our previous two Premier League wins at Old Trafford. Jan’s Old Trafford "goal" came in the 3-2 win in September 2012. Clint Dempsey scored our third goal that day, and has this week announced his retirement from the game at the age of 35. Clint spent the last five years with Seattle Sounders for whom he scored 47 league goals in 115 games.

Lucas Moura, signed in January this year, scored his first Premier League goal against Fulham and added two more at Old Trafford to make him our early top scorer, and player of the month, having been voted man of the match against Fulham and Manchester United.

Lucas had the benefit of a full pre-season, and had a good tour in the US, scoring two against Roma, and then getting our only goal in our defeat in Spain against Girona. Incidentally, for the record, Spurs did officially win this year’s International Champions Cup.

Each of Lucas’s goals have been impressive and he has shown a good turn of pace and ability to get around players in each of our games. Lucas has energised Spurs!

Harry Kane finally scored a Premier league goal in August. For good measure he has now scored two. One against Fulham. The other was his first Spurs goal at Old Trafford. Incidentally, Harry now has 142 club goals to his name, and one more will take him level with 6th placed Jermain Defoe, with the legendary Cliff Jones next in his sights! Cliff scored 159 club goals.

The prolonged delay of the opening of our wonderful new stadium is a disappointment, but we do have top class Premier League games and Champions League football to look forward to, wherever we play.

September will be busy, despite the forthcoming International break in which we must hope that our key players (especially England Captain Kane) are used sparingly. After the break we have a tasty home game against Liverpool and we now know that in The Champions League we face Inter away before the end of the month, with Barcelona and PSV Eindhoven to follow in Group B. That is truly mouth-watering stuff! We will also play a third round game at "home" to Watford, and this is likely to be at Milton Keynes, but will not be confirmed for a week yet.

Let the firsts continue in September!
