Games of the Season - 2006-7

Game of the Season (1) - Besiktas 0 Spurs 2

Spurs went to Istanbul for their first Round Two UEFA Cup Group game in October 2006, with an unblemished record in Europe (after two 1-0 victories over Slavia Prague) but on the back of poor league form, which left them languishing in the bottom half of the Premiership in 14th place. A superb team performance, with goals by Hossam Ghaly and man of the match Dimitar Berbatov, led to the best result possible!

Game of the Season (2) - Spurs 3 Club Brugge 1

Spurs second UEFA Cup Round Two game makes the list of selected games of the season for its entertainment value. The game followed four consecutive clean sheets for Spurs - a rare commodity indeed over the course of the season! Whilst the preceding Premiership game had once again been un-inspiring (at Watford), and we still hadn't managed to creep out of the bottom half, another man-of-the-match performance by Berbatov all but ensured our progress to the knock-out stages of the competition

Game of the Season (3) - Spurs 2 Chelsea 1

In many seasons, my third choice of a selection of "Games of the 2006-7 Season" would be everybody's number one memory of the season. At long last Spurs put paid to one of the most famous hoodoos in Premiership history. Nico Claesen (1987) is no longer the last man to score a winning goal for Spurs at home to Chelsea. That statistic now bears the name of Aaron Lennon. This game is probably still the favourite of many Spurs fans, but mine will be revealed later in the series!

Game of the Season (4) - Bayer 04 Leverkusen 0 Spurs 1

I've picked the Leverkusen game for reasons other than the result and/or the level of skill and entertainment offered. Once again, Dimitar Berbatov was the subject of the match photo, and scored the solitary goal against his former club to make it 9 points out of 9 for Spurs in the UEFA Cup group stage. I picked this one, because we all had a great day out in Germany, and especially because of the terrific atmosphere created inside the stadium by less than 1500 Spurs fans. I am sure the fans had as much to do with this victory as the players!

Game of the Season (5) - Spurs 5 Charlton 1

Any 5-1 victory is worthy of being a choice for a game of the season, isn't it? This one came on the back of a terrible defeat at The Emirates Stadium a week previously, and when I demanded 6 points from our next two games against Middlesbrough and Charlton, I got them! Berby got two goals and Steed Malbranque scored his first goal - getting booked for his celebration!

Game of the Season (6) - Spurs 3 Dinamo Bucuresti 1

My sixth selection for this series is our final UEFA Cup Round Two group game. When the draw was made, many people (me included) thought that Spurs would have a tough time, and that this final game would carry no meaning by the time it was played. That was almost true, but only because Spurs had all but won the group section, and that they were now playing for the privilege of a preferable Third Round draw. As it was of course we got ther best draw going eventually - a bye past the banned Feyenoord!

Dinamo Bucuresti were the runaway leaders of their league when we played them; going on to win by a 6-point margin. They will play Champions League football next season (via the qualifiers), which is where we want Spurs to be next year.

Game of the Season (7) - Fulham 0 Spurs 4

For our seventh "Game of the 2006-07 season, we jump forward two months to the fifth round of the FA Cup at Craven Cottage. Spurs had suffered a hiatus in their form for most of January and early February, and the morale of the team and the fans had reached a low on the run-up to this game. The team delivered the goods in the best way possible, and we were astounded and delighted with the quality of all the goals!

Game of the Season (8) - Spurs 4 Bolton 1

The report says it all really, about why I have picked this match as one of the best of the season. The game featured what i considered to be the finest individual performance of this season (Berbatov) and for many a year too. I hope you enjoy reading about it again!

Game of the Season (9) - West Ham 3 Spurs 4

You've been waiting for this one, haven't you? This match was the favourite of many, I suspect, and for the laughs I had all the way back home, and the next day, I think I have to say it was my favourite game of the season too! It is a shame that we will see the Hammers again next year though, isn't it? Mind you, at the time of writing, it looks very much like we have secured the signature of Darren Bent who turned down what was reported as a better deal for him (and his club) to go to Upton Park, in favour of a team where he obviously decided he had a better future!

Game of the Season (10) - Chelsea 3 Spurs 3

I have already declared the West Ham game as my favourite of the season (although that had plenty of low points before that fantastic finish!), but the feeling of beating Chelsea at home, and the half-time sensation at Stamford Bridge in this game also took some beating. Spurs' performances against Chelsea this season have been a far cry from some of the dismal results we have had to put up with not so long ago. Let the trend continue!

Game of the Season (11) - Charlton 0 Spurs 2

In normal circumstances, this game would not qualify for inclusion in the pick of the season. It wasn't actually a great game, but Spurs 100th goal of the season was one of great quality (by Dimitar Berbatov), and the win gave us all the belief that we would be returning to Europe in 2007-08.
