Spurs to steal a march on contenders.

When Spurs won 2-0 at Ewood Park in their last game before Christmas, it was the second game in a run of six, where we kept a clean sheet. In fact in our 16 games since Blackburn, in all competitions, we have kept a further 9 clean sheets including three against our quarter-final replay opponents, Fulham.

A couple of common factors in this run have been the constant presence of goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes, and centre-back Michael Dawson, both of whom should carry on their run in Saturday's lunch-time televised game. Sky's choice of this game is a bit of a mystery, but perhaps they thought that Blackburn would be embroiled in the relegation battle.

As it is, Sam Allardyce has managed to keep his charges above the drop zone since November. They are not mathematically safe, but a 10 point gap at this stage of the season is considerable. Like Spurs, Rovers have not played a league game for two weeks. They were scheduled to play fellow our fellow FA Cup quarter-finalists Birmingham last week. Unlike Spurs, of course, Rovers have had a week off, so ought to be fresher than Spurs for this game.

However, Blackburn haven't travelled well in their 14 away games to date, winning only at The Reebock, and managing draws at Hull, Wigan and West Ham. They have also only scored 9 away goals, and only 4 teams have scored less on their travels. Blackburn did score a few goals on their Carling Cup run though, incluuding the 4 they scored in the rather spectacular 6-4 defeat at Villa Park. Rovers' recent form has been good too, with three home wins under their belt, along with that draw at Upton Park and a 2-1 defeat at Anfield last time out.

That Spurs win in December came courtesy of two goals by Peter Crouch, one of which was made by the forward runs of Jermaine Jenas and Robbie Keane, both of whom will miss this game for different reasons. Keane continues his sojourn at Celtic, whilst Jenas is a week away from fitness, due to his groin strain.

Peter Crouch has scored just two Spurs goals since December, and only one of those was in the Premier League, against Fulham in January. However, he did get those two goals against Egypt, and may this week be preferred to Roman Pavlyuchenko to combat the height of Christopher Samba. Jermain Defoe is fit to start.

Spurs have to wait at least two more weeks for the chance of Tom Huddlestone to be fit, and Aaron Lennon may also have at least that time to wait before his first game of 2010. The Spurs starting line-up could be the same as at Fulham last week, with the exception of Crouch. Harry Redknapp will have Younes Kaboul and Kyle Walker available for bench duties.

Blackburn's only major absentees are defenders Lars Jacobsen and Ryan Nelsen. Spurs fans will give Paul Robinson a rousing reception, whilst their feelings towards Pascal Chimbonda will be more reserved. There is another Croatian striker to think about this week, as Nikola Kalinic is a possible starter for Blackburn. Kalinic has 3 full International caps, but has been playing more for the Croatian Under-21s this season. He has scored 7 goals in all competitions for Rovers this season, but only two of those have been in League matches. Midfielder David Dunn remains Rovers top scorer in the Premier League with just 5 goals, the last of which was scored in November. Blackburn included three more attacking players in their last game. They were Canadian striker David Hoilett, and the more familiar Morten Gamst Pedersen, along with El Hadji Diouf.

On paper and on form then, Spurs ought to win this one by at least two goals. However, we all know that Spurs have let the form book out of the window on too many occasions this season. By winning though, we would steal a march on our fellow contenders, none of whom would be able to overtake us. Aston Villa play two away games (at Stoke and Wigan) in the next 5 days. Liverpool are at home to Portsmouth on Monday night, and Man City are at Sunderland on Sunday.

Last season's corresponding game came within a month of Harry Redknapp's appointment as manager. Spurs won 1-0, thanks to a Pavlyuchenko goal. Blackburn could become our third "league double" victims of the season on Saturday. West Ham and of course Wigan were the other such victims for us this season.

I'll go for that two goal win for Spurs, and predict a 3-1.
