Three points imperative for Spurs!
A fourth from bottom finish this season would have been brilliant for Eddie Howe's side, who so brilliantly won promotion last year. Whilst the Bournemouth coach won't yet accept it as a fact, their haul of 38 points already surely assures them of a second Premier League season, and a share in the extra money bonanza that comes with that status next season. Bournemouth are having a fantastic time!
Since we won 5-1 at Dean Court in October, "The Cherries" have not suffered anything like such a big defeat. In fairness, it was a day when everything went right for Spurs, and hat-trick star Harry Kane; whereas goalkeeper Artur Boruc could do almost nothing right.
Bournemouth toyed with the relegation places for a few more games, but since December only Spurs and Leicester have gained more Premier League points than our visitors tomorrow. Another string to their bow is the fact that Bournemouth (117 kilometres) and Spurs (116 kilometres) have covered more ground on average per game than any other Premier League teaam. Hard work and fitness has its rewards on the football pitch!
"The Cherries" have climbed to fourteenth place on the back of three consecutive wins, two of which have been over teams in the relegation fight. Newcastle were pushed to finally sack Steve Mclaren after their dismal 3-1 home defeat to Howe's men, and last Saturday Swansea fell the wrong side of a five goal thriller at Dean Court. The first of those three wins came with a morale boosting 2-0 win over local rivals Southampton, which was a big coup for the home side.
Left back Charlie Daniels scored a 90th minute goal at St. James' Park to secure that win over Newcastle. Daniels has missed only one league game this season, and was recently rewarded with an extended contract until June 2019. 29 year old Daniels is at the pinnacle of his career, having started as a Spurs junior, signing professional terms in 2005. It is pleasing to see another former Spurs player - Adam Smith - also getting plenty of game time at Bournemouth. Adam plays at right back, and he has been a 90 minute man for the last 16 Premier League games.
23 year old Benik Afobe was a January signing for Eddie Howe, and has already scored 4 goals in his 10 league games, one of which was in that win over Southampton. Josh King has scored in the last two games, and defender Steve Cook has scored two in three games, having previously scored last September. Callum Wilson (5 goals) surprisingly remains Bournemouth's top league goalscorer, despite injury preventing him playing since September. Wilson's status is helped by a hat-trick when "The Cherries susprised West Ham at The Boleyn ground with a 4-3 win in August!
Although we are kicking off at 4pm tomorrow, our game is not being televised live. Leicester got yet another 1-0 win at Selhurst Park today against Crystal Palace, who still have not won a Premier League game since December 19th. Leicester's win is their fourth 1-0 in five games, and takes them to 66 points, a full 8 above Spurs. We just have to make sure we win and do not fall further behind "The Foxes", whose fairy tale season gets ever closer to a happy ending. Christian Eriksen and Mousa Dembele will be available, as expected, along with Harry Kane, who also had a rest on Thursday night. Both Ben Davies and Nabil Bentaleb join Jan Vertonghen and Clinton N'Jie on the injury list.
Both Spurs and Leicester have difficult games to come, but it goes without saying that a win tomorrow is imperative for us to maintain any title hopes. I think we will do just that, and I fancy a 3-1 win too. Bournemouth will contribute fully to an exciting and open game of football.
COME ON YOU SPURS!
Tomorrow's match referee is Neil Swarbrick, who we are surprsingly seeing for the first time this season. He was last in charge of a Spurs game last January for the first leg off our Capital One Cup semi-final game against Sheffield United. Mr. Swarbrick has only refereed 11 Premier League games so far this season, working on other occasions in each of the other tiers in English football.
Did you know? - Former Spurs striker Jermain Defoe also played for Bournemouth. Having made his debut for West Ham as a susbtitute in September 2000 as a substitute in a Leabue Cup game, Jermain went on loan to Bournemouth in October and created a Football League record, scoring in his first ten consecutive league games! Defoe spent the rest of the season with Bournemouth, scoring 18 league goals in total in 27 games, before returning to his home club, and making his Premier League debut as a substitute at Middlesbrough. Jermain signed for us in January 2004.
· 10 years ago at this stage of the season we beat West Brom 2-1, thanks to two goals by Robbie Keane
