Looking forward to the Conte factor

The Spurs Odyssey Flag

Spurs were still waiting today for Antonio Conte's work permit to come through, so the club's Football Director Fabio Paratici took this afternoon's press conference. Hugo Lloris was the chosen representative from the players to speak to the press. That in itself indicates we will be playing a strong team for this game, as Hugo so far has only featured in Premier League games.

I am sure that Antonio will be in the dug-out for this game, but whatever the case, the "Conte factor" must surely have a positive effect upon all the players who need to prove themselves worthy of the new coach's favour. Whether we will see three at the back and wing-backs remains to be seen, but most of Spurs' personnel are available.

Spurs must surely seek to win their remaining three group G games, two of which are at home. 9 points would give them a chance of finishing top of the group, thus skipping the "play-off" round that precedes the Round of 16. Firstly therefore, we need to beat Vitesse who were the victors two weeks ago.

Vitesse have lost one and won one of the two games they have played since beating Spurs. They lost 2-1 at home to Go Ahead Eagles, but beat Heerenveen away on Saturday by the same score. 21-year-old Ikoma "Lois" Openda has scored all three of Vitesse's goals in those two games, one of which was from the penalty spot. Vitesse now sit in fifth place in the Eredivisie with 19 points, seven points behind leaders Ajax.

Vitesse had never beaten an English club in UEFA competition, nor even scored a goal against them until they beat Spurs two weeks ago. We must hope for a return to their previous form against English clubs. THFC have again promoted tickets for the game, and although the upper tiers were closed when booking tickets at the start of this campaign, they will be hoping for a larger crowd than we saw in our previous two European games.

It's a poor state of affairs when you look at our record so far in this third tier European competition. We've managed to lose two of the five games we have played so far against moderate opposition.

Surely this is a "must-win" game for Spurs, and I think it is a game we will win. I'll go for a scoreline of 3-1.

Did you know? Willem Korsten is the only player to have featured for both Vitesse and Tottenham. Willem played for Vitesse between 1993 and 1999. He transferred to Leeds, for whom he scored two goals in 7 league games. Korsten played against Spurs in our fifth round FA Cup tie in 1999 before signing for Spurs in the summer of 1999. He made 12 starts and 11 substitute appearances in the Premier League for Spurs. His claim to fame was to score two of our goals in a 3-1 home win against Manchester United on 19th May 2001. Sadly, injury brought Korsten's career to a premature end.

Referee Marco Di Bello and his officials are from Italy. Signor Di Bello has never refereed Spurs before. He is currently refereeing in Serie A and all levels of International and Europoean football. In January this referee had charge of a 2-2 draw between Roma and Antonio Conte's Inter!
