Trepidation about Spurs again

The Spurs Odyssey Flag

"The great fallacy is that the game is first and last about winning. It's nothing of the kind. The game is about glory. It is about doing things in style, with a flourish, about going out to beat the other lot, not waiting for them to die of boredom." - Danny Blanchflower

We formally enter the second half of the Premier League season as we play Match 20 of the 38-game programme. We played Bournemouth away in match number three on 26th August when James Maddison scored his first competitive club goal and Dejan Kulusevski scored the first of his five goals this season. Neither of these players will be available to us tomorrow on New Year's Eve when the game (not televised in the UK) kicks off at 2pm.

Maddison, along with too many others, is injured, and "Deki" was booked for the fifth time on Thursday, earning himself a one-match suspension in the very last game before the 5-booking deadline of the first 19 league games.

Spurs had eight different scorers in our first four Premier League games. Our top scorer and captain Son Heung-min didn't score until the fourth of those games, when he got a hat-trick at Burnley. After tomorrow, we'll be missing him for as long as he is involved with South Korea's pursuit of the Asian Cup being held in Qatar. The Final is on February 10th.

Bournemouth's Dominic Solanke has hit a rich vein of form with 6 goals in his team's last four games which included a hat-trick at Nottingham Forest. Only Erling Haaland stands above Solanke in the Premier League score chart going into this weekend's round of games.

Solanke's form coincides with that of his team who had a dreadful start to the season, losing seven of their first 11 league games, and who are now unbeaten in their last seven games, winning six of those. Those wins included a sensational 3-0 at Old Trafford. Their Boxing Day win at home to Fulham (also a 3-0) gave them tenth place in the table until later games were played.

Bournemouth haven't reached that 19-game threshold yet, as they had the trauma of Luton skipper Tom Lockyer's collapse before Christmas. Bournemouth players and staff were praised for their alertness and prompt reaction to Lockyer's condition. The Luton man continues his recuperation at home.

Bournemouth shocked us last April with a first away win against Spurs. It was Cristian Stellini's penultimate game in charge before the following week's debacle at Newcastle. Solanke was one of Bournemouth's scorers in their 3-2 win.

Speaking of Newcastle, it is sad to think that was Hugo Lloris's final Spurs appearance. Nothing has been announced officially at the time of writing, but it seems he is off to play for Los Angeles. Hopefully, we will be able to give Hugo the send-off he deserves for over 11 years' loyal service. Hugo was ahead of his time insofar as we used to call him the "sweeper keeper". He had some truly brilliant moments with Spurs for whom he made 447 appearances, placing him seventh in our all-time list.

Spurs have now lost five of their last nine games in the Premier League (won three). We have also conceded four goals in two of those games. In our 19th game, at Brighton, Spurs trailed by two or more goals for the first away game so far in this Premier League season.

I imagine Giovani Lo Celso will replace Kulusevski in that central role behind Richarlison tomorrow and that maybe Oliver Skipp will start in midfield in place of Hojbjerg. I also think Eric Dier might be a better choice than Emerson against Solanke. It will be tough game, but I hope the crowd can urge Spurs to a 2-1 win.

I wish all readers a very happy 2024!

Simon Hooper is our match referee for the eighth time in all. This is his third Spurs game this season, having previously had charge of our eventful win over Liverpool and the draw at Manchester City.
