Spurs need to be "right on" at Brighton

Brighton v Spurs - 08.10.22

Thanks to Cassim Patel for the picture

Thanks to the demands of Amazon Prime, who have the TV rights to this round of games, Spurs' "Boxing Day fixture has been delayed until Thursday 28th December (7.30pm). I cannot remember playing this traditional holiday game so late, and there have been occasions when the Boxing Day game has been followed by another match two days later.

Brighton have had a full week since their last game when they drew the "M23 Derby" at Selhurst Park.

Like Spurs, "The Seagulls" have a long injury list which includes 21-year-old forward Ansu Fati (on a season-long loan from Barcelona), 19-year-old forward Enciso, defenders Joel Veltman, Adam Webster, Tariq Lamptey and Estupinan, along with wing-man Solly March. Zippy Japanese forward Kaoru Mitoma will be out for about four weeks and will be missed. Joao Pedro, who joined from Watford for a fee of £30 million, has had a successful season, scoring 10 goals in all competitions - 6 of those from the penalty spot.

Veteran striker Danny Welbeck scored Brighton's equaliser at Palace with an excellent header. Somehow, despite their injuries and the high profile departures of the likes of Caicedo and Mac Allister; Brighton's excellent recruiting programme and the ferocious leadership of coach Roberto de Zerbi gives them continuing success. Brighton are to be commended as, like West Ham and Liverpool they won their Europa League group and will not have to play until the round of 16.

Brighton finished sixth last season (their highest ever top flight finish) and qualified for European football for the first time. Whilst sixth place was virtually certain already, the point which sealed their position was gained against Champions Manchester City and Roberto De Zerbi was being hailed by some in the media as a future replacement for Pep Guardiola!

Now in their seventh Premier League season, Brighton have become formidable opponents for any team and Spurs will need to be at their best to get a result here. At least we will have Udogie back after another one-match suspension, but former Brighton man Yves Bissouma is having an enforced 4-match break. The latest bad news is that Romero is going to be out for 4-5 weeks with his hamstring strain. That surely means both Dier and Davies at centre-back tomorrow. Hopefully, Richarlison will be available despite being taken off in the Everton game last Saturday due to injuries. Ange Postecoglou is reporting that Micky van de Ven may make it back in time for the trip to Old Trafford on 14th January.

Last year Spurs managed an excellent 1-0 win thanks to a Harry Kane goal. Kane scored 10 goals in 11 appearances for Tottenham against Brighton. The Seagulls became the ninth team against whom he had reached double figures at the time.

Before that game last October Spurs players wore training shirts paying tribute to Gian Piero Ventrone, who passed away in the preceding week. The motif was "Always in our hearts". The game was preceded by a period of applause for the Spurs fitness coach, and Antonio Conte's tears for his friend and colleague were plain to see.

Spurs recorded a second Premier League double over Brighton last season. They also beat them home and away in 2018-19. Son scored his 100th EPL goal in last season's home game and became the first Asian player to score 100 Premier League goals. On Saturday "Sonny" scored our 100th Premier League goal against Everton!

James Milner (who will be 38 on January 4th) signed for Brighton on a free transfer after the end of his Liverpool contract and has a one-year deal. Milner made his Premier League debut for Leeds in November 2002. His third appearance was in the same month at White Hart Lane when Spurs won 2-0. Milner has made 7 Premier League starts this season and also came off the bench four times.

Other summer signings included goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen from Anderlecht and Germany midfielder Mahmoud Dahoud from Borussia Dortmund.

When he scored three goals against Newcastle on 2nd September, Evan Ferguson became only the fourth player to score a Premier League hat-trick before their 19th birthday after Chris Bart-Williams, Robbie Fowler, and Michael Owen. Ferguson has scored three other goals in his 16 Premier League appearances this season.

We played Brighton at home on Boxing Day 2019 and won 2-1.

The only other festive season meeting against "The Seagulls" was on December 28th, 1982, at White Hart Lane when we won 2-0 with goals by Ricky Villa and Chris Hughton, who subsequently managed the South coast side between December 2014 and May 2019.

Spurs have now scored in 15 consecutive away games in the Premier League for the first time. I fancy us to score tomorrow and also to win 2-1. Let's hope we can reach the apex at "The Amex!"

Jarred Gillett will be our match referee for the sixth time. We were not too impressed when he recently oversaw our win at Forest.

Did you know? - Sunday 31 January 2021 - Brighton 1 Tottenham 0 - This was Tottenham's 1,096th Premier League game, and the first in which they did not start a single English player. Indeed, the last side to name a starting XI entirely of non-English players were Arsenal against Spurs in July of last season. Spurs also did not start an English player for the second and third times this season against Aston Villa and Manchester City.
