Sean Dyche's men have the bit between their teeth

Welcome to N17

Cast your mind back 5 years to 23rd December, 2018 when Spurs treated themselves to a pre-Christmas feast of goals when beating Everton 6-2 at Goodison Park! Spurs were in the midst of an 11-game unbeaten run of form of which they won 10 games, drawing only at Barcelona. We travelled to Goodison Park immediately after a marvellous 2-0 League Cup quarter-final away to Arsenal in which Dele Alli had scored a super goal.

Dele also scored one of our six goals against Everton. Son and Kane potted twice each, and Christian Eriksen completed our list of scorers. This Saturday's pre-Christmas fare will not feature Dele Alli, although he is still an Everton player. Dele left Spurs in January 2022 and spent much of last season on loan with Besiktas. Dele opened his heart in an interview with Gary Neville earlier this year revealing the sadness of his early family life. He has yet to feature for Everton this season and has been battling a pelvic injury, but he may return after Christmas. However, Everton are close to incurring a £10 million payment connected to Dele's appearances as part of the agreement when he left Spurs without a fee.

The Everton side of December 2018 included Richarlison, who had been signed that summer from Watford that summer. Managed by former Watford coach Marco Silva (now at Fulham), Everton had not kept a clean sheet for four games.

Things will be different now. Sean Dyche's team have the bit between their teeth, especially after the club were docked 10 points by the FA regarding EPL Profit & Sustainability rules. That penalty sent the club into the relegation zone, which they have struggled hard to avoid over the last couple of years. They had already beaten Palace away before the penalty was imposed. Now they are on a run of four consecutive league wins and have kept clean sheets in each of those games.

Only Tottenham (18) have won more Premier League points away from home than Everton this season (16). The Toffees' 16 points is already more than they won on the road in the whole of last season (15).

Last night (Tuesday) Everton did concede a goal and were knocked out of the Carabao Cup quarter-final by former manager Marco Silva's Fulham in a penalty shootout.

In 2018, Everton went to Turf Moor on Boxing Day and won 5-1 (Richarlison scored their fifth). Last Saturday they went to Turf Moor and won 2-0. One of "The Toffees"' goals was scored by 6ft 3inch Amadou Onana from a corner. The other was scored by defender Michael Keane, although not directly from a set piece. The Spurs defence will have to be at their strongest and best in such situations where Dyche teams have always been dangerous.

Excluding penalties, Everton have scored more goals from set-piece situations than any other side in the Premier League this season (10). Seven of these have come from corners. They average a goal every 11.6 corners this season, the best ratio in the Premier League.

That Spurs defence is going to be missing the suspended Udogie, and the midfield will have to do without the undisciplined, suspended Yves Bissouma for our next four games and beyond, bearing in mind his commitment to the African Cup of Nations by the time he becomes eligible again for Spurs. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg will step up. Hojbjerg scored one of our two goals in last season's home win. I hope that Giovani Lo Celso can return with some midfield creativity. I am also hopeful that Brennan Johnson is fit to play, as he was not concussed last week at Forest.

Everton have had too many last day close calls in the Premier League but Abdoulaye Doucoure's fifth goal for Sean Dyche was enough to preserve their 69-year stay in the top flight on the last day of last season when "The Toffees" beat Bournemouth. Four of Dyche's five wins after his appointment last season were by the solitary goal of the game. The other was the freakish 5-1 at Brighton.

Everton did not trigger the clause to sign Conor Coady on permanent deal from Wolves. Coady was available for £4.5 million but Everton did not proceed. He returned to Wolves and was sold to relegated Leicester.

Defender Yerry Mina and forward Andros Townsend left Everton when their contracts expired at the end of June, along with Asmir Begovic after the goalkeeper rejected a new deal offered by the Club. Former Spur Townsend is currently playing at Luton.

In July, Everton confirmed the signing of Ashley Young (now 38) on a one-year contract after his contract with Aston Villa had ended. Young made his first appearance for Watford on 13th September 2003 and scored a 90th minute goal against Millwall. He is a veteran with over 500 league appearances for Watford, Aston Villa (2 spells), Manchester United and Inter. I once met the father and daughter Watford fans who were Young's boot or kit sponsors.

Other Everton signings include former Spurs loanee Arnaut Danjuma on loan from Villarreal. Danjuma had looked set to join Everton in January but opted for Spurs. Jack Harrison signed on a season-long loan from Leeds United and has made 11 Premier League appearances this season.

Everton also signed Portuguese striker Beto from Italian side Udinese whilst Demarai Gray left for Saudi Arabia.

Two months ago, Everton mourned the passing of their Chairman Bill Kenwright to whom tribute was paid at the Royal Variety Show which was televised last week, because of his theatrical production history. Everton's longest serving chairman for more than a century, Kenwright led the club through a period of unprecedented change in English football. In recent years, he and other members of the executive have been subject to severe fan dissatisfaction. Both Everton and Liverpool football clubs were represented at Bill Kenwright's memorial service held earlier this week.

This preview is being published early due my pre-Christmas commitments, but my match report should be online on Christmas Eve. Let's hope the report reflects a Spurs win which would lift us above World Club Cup contenders Manchester City! City will be Everton's next opponents and will be desperate for a point or more out of our game. I'll take us to edge this by the odd goal in three.

Stuart Attwell referees Spurs for the first time this season. First seen by Spurs fans as long ago as January 2010, Mr Attwell's last Spurs game was our home win against Brighton in April.

Did you know? - Gylfi Sigurdsson, who was formally released from his contract with Everton in 2022 scored his last professional goals for "The Toffees" against Spurs in a 2-2 draw at Goodison Park on 21st April 2021. Gylfi played for Spurs in the 2012/13 and 2013/14 seasons and scored for Spurs against Everton in another 2-2 draw at White Hart Lane in April 2013.

Gylfi also scored in that 6-2 defeat by Spurs in 2018. Now aged 34, he is now on the books of Lyngby in Denmark and also played twice for Iceland in October after a three-year hiatus.
