The meeting of two injury-stricken teams

The Spurs Odyssey Flag

"The great fallacy is that the game is first and last about winning. It's nothing of the kind. The game is about glory. It is about doing things in style, with a flourish, about going out to beat the other lot, not waiting for them to die of boredom." - Danny Blanchflower

It's the meeting of two injury-stricken teams. Spurs' injury problems are well known and the key players definitely missing are centre-back Micky van de Ven, ace midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur, and playmaker James Maddison. Others, such as Perisic, Dier, Solomon and Sessegnon cannot be regarded as key. We haven't seen Ryan Sessegnon since February anyway! Our captain and top scorer Son Heung-min is a doubt after suffering soreness (lower back) on Thursday. Richarlison might have to step up to the plate and start this game.

Newcastle's issues are a long-term suspension (Sandro Tonali), the longest injury list in the Premier League and tiredness of those players having to play every game, which this season includes the Champions League.

Eddie Howe's side have a vital Champions League game against Milan on Wednesday when their qualification for even Europa League football will be at risk. However, they could yet qualify for the knock-out stages with a win but must rely upon Dortmund getting a result at home to PSG.

Sandro Tonali was signed on a five-year contract, becoming Eddie Howe's first signing of the summer as his side prepared for Champions League football. The reported £55million fee made him the most expensive Italian footballer of all time.

Tonali shone and scored in Newcastle's opening day 5-1 thrashing of Aston Villa but is now banned (for breaching betting rules) until August and will be unavailable to feature at Euro 2024.

Newcastle might have club captain Jamaal Lascelles available tomorrow (4.30pm - SKY), but definite absentees include goalkeeper Nick Pope, defenders Dan Burn, Sven Botman, Javier Manquillo and Matt Targett, plus Elliott Anderson, Sean Longstaff, Joe Willock, Harvey Barnes and equal top scorer Callum Wilson.

Having said that Newcastle's second-choice keeper Dubravka has been an excellent servant and Howe can still count upon former Spur Kieran Trippier, Bruno Guimaraes, Miguel Almiron, Anthony Gordon and another equal tip scorer - Alexander Isak. He and Wilson both have 7 Premier League goals to their name.

Kieran Trippier (still a regular for England) has often captained the Newcastle side but made two bad mistakes on Thursday night in the 3-0 defeat at Goodison Park.

Newcastle's recent away form of late has not been so good, drawing at Molineux and suffering bad defeats at Bournemouth and Everton. Their overall form recently is better than that of Spurs who desperately want to win and to avoid a fourth consecutive home defeat.

Spurs are now without a win in the Premier League since their visit to Crystal Palace on 27 October 2023; longer than any other team currently in the division.

Last season Newcastle achieved their first league double over Spurs since 2015-16. The 6-1 away defeat under stand-in coach Cristian Stellini was a real shocker and was Stellini's last game in charge.

In his 2023 publication "Arthur Push-And-Run Rowe" (ISBN 978-1-915616-00-5), author Norman Turpin described Spurs' 7-0 defeat of Newcastle on 18th November 1950 as Rowe's best ever 90 minutes as manager. Newcastle were a powerful side and included the legendary "Wor" Jackie Milburn, George Robledo and future manager Joe Harvey. The Spurs side included legends Alf Ramsey and Bill Nicholson.

Ange Postecoglou said after our defeat to West Ham that the side lacked conviction. "Ange-ball" could benefit from a little tweaking with the emphasis on moving forward in the same vein as "push and run".

Newcastle gave their all at Goodison and will be a difficult opponent, despite their absentees. Optimistically and perhaps foolishly, I am predicting a 3-1 home win.

This will be referee Chris Kavanagh's 13th game in charge of Spurs. Surprisingly, we didn't see him in the middle at all last season. His last Spurs game in charge was our 5-0 win at Norwich on the last day of the 21-22 season. Mr. Kavanagh has had charge of 8 Premier League matches this season and officiated the Man Utd v Chelsea game on Wednesday night.
