Friday night at The City Ground

Nottingham Forest v Spurs League Cup tie under lights last year

Spurs travel to Nottingham Forest's City Ground for a SKY "Friday Night Football" production, kicking off at 8pm. Forest's recent form matches that of Spurs with 4 defeats, one draw and just win. However, Spurs got their mojo back last Sunday with a brilliant 4-1 win over Newcastle, whilst Forest's most recent win was at the start of this 6-game form guide period. They did however beat Unai Emery's title contenders Aston Villa.

Forest are in their second Premier League season after their 23-year absence. The press knives were being unsheathed last week when Steve Cooper's team were thrashed 5-0 at Craven Cottage, but the travelling fans were still chanting his name in adoration, and the manager remains in post.

Forest secured this second Premier League season with their 1-0 home win over Arsenal on Saturday May 20th. Nigerian International striker Taiwo Awoniyi scored the goal which was his fifth in three successive games in which Forest secured seven points. Awoniyi had scored 4 previous league goals in the season. Awoniyi added another goal in Forest's last day draw at Selhurst Park. He also scored in the first three games of this season but hasn't played for his club since before the international break and is now expected to be out till March with a groin injury.

Brennan Johnson will, fitness permitting, return to his boyhood club for the first time. Spurs lost the last time they visited the City Ground (a 2-0 Carabao Cup defeat 13 months ago) but have won the last four league meetings between these clubs. Johnson was signed in August for £45 million and has played a prominent part in several of his 10 league appearances so far. I expect Spurs to play an unchanged side in the same formation which was so impactive against Newcastle last Sunday. Johnson, who is still only 22, scored 24 goals in his 91 league appearances for Forest. He played against us in all three meetings last season but did not score.

At his press conference today, Ange Postecoglou confirmed that Giovani Lo Celso will miss this game due a slight training injury.

Last season's corresponding game was played in August with both our goals scored by Harry Kane. Nottingham Forest's starting XI against Tottenham Hotspur in August 2022 was all-British, the first entirely British and Northern Irish starting XI for a Premier League match since Blackpool's against Man Utd in May 2011. At the other extreme, when we played Manchester City two weeks ago, it was the third time we had started a game without an English player. The first occasion had been at Brighton in January 2021. The second had been the week before the City game, at home to Aston Villa.

Forest made lots of signings last year and there were many more changes this season. Chris Wood's loan move was made permanent for a £15m fee. Jesse Lingard was released. Other players released included Andre Ayew, Cafu, and Jack Colback. Former Spur Serge Aurier took up the option for an extra year on his contract. Serge has been a Forest regular but is out till Boxing Day with a heel injury.

Defender Harry Toffolo was charged last summer by the Football Association for breaching its betting rules 375 times, but received a banning order which was suspended until the end of the 24/25 season. Toffolo (born in Welwyn Garden City) scored Forest's goal in Saturday's 1-1 draw at Molineux.

Summer signings included Nigeria international Ola Aina on a one-year deal after his contract with Serie A side Torino expired. Aina is a 27-year-old former Chelsea defender, who spent time with Fulham in the 20/21 season. Anthony Elanga was signed from Manchester United for £15 million and USA international goalkeeper Matt Turner came from Arsenal.

A player who has caught the eye is 21-year-old Brazilian centre-half Murillo, signed from Corinthians. Murillo has played in 10 games this season but may miss tomorrow's game with a tight hamstring. One who has not caught they eye, but was signed on loan from A.C. Milan, is the man who put the nail in our Champions League Final hopes with Liverpool's late second goal in Madrid in 2019 - Divock Origi.

Among still more signings was another former Chelsea player - Callum Hudson-Odoi. With all the players at his disposal, perhaps Steve Cooper has a problem finding his best team.

Forest have slipped down towards the relegation zone and there will be a noisy home atmosphere under the lights to try and encourage their team towards what would be a very significant win. Such a result is not beyond the bounds of possibility, but I strongly fancy Spurs to win 3-1.

Match referee Jarred Gillett is in charge of Spurs for just the fifth time. Mr. Gillett has come a long way since we first met him at an ill-fated league cup penalty shoot-out defeat to lowly Colchester in September 2019. Born in Australia Mr. Gillett was one the most experienced officials in the Australian A league but came to England to study at Liverpool University - specialising in research on children with cerebral palsy. He is now an established senior official and this will be his sixth Premier League game this season. Mr Gillett also officiates in minor European games. This will be his first Spurs game this season.
