When Saturday comes* - again!

Welcome to N17

It's not so unusual to have consecutive Premier League games on a Saturday (this will be our third consecutive Saturday game), but to have two successive Saturday 3pm kick-offs is something of a luxury in the mass-televisual Premier League era. This week is only the second time this season we have had two consecutive non-televised (in the UK) games and only the third occasion in 2023-24 that we have had two 3pm Saturday games on the trot. Wolves are our visitors and to have another Saturday home game at 3pm is a real treat!

Wolves suffered a major blow last week when their star striker Matheus Cunha had to be substituted with a hamstring injury after just 20 minutes of last week's 2-0 home defeat to Brentford. Cunha's absence probably had everything to do with the reverse (only Wolves' second in their last seven league games), but on the plus side for Wolves, another striker Hwang Hee-Chan is likely to return after his absence with South Korea. Hwang missed last week's game with a calf injury.

Our captain has been in the news this week, with regard to his time with South Korea in the Asian Cup, as it turns out he suffered a dislocated finger after a row broke out in the South Korea squad on the eve of their shock Asian Cup exit to Jordan. That's why "Sonny"'s hand was strapped last week. Incidentally, the very latest news reports say that former Spur Jurgen Klinsmann has been sacked as South Korea's coach.

Giovani Lo Celso is back in training and probably match fit this week, so apart from the continuing absences of Ryan Sessegnon and Manor Solomon, Ange Postecoglou will hopefully have a strong squad to pick from. Sessegnon was spotted in yesterday's open training session, but it might be too early for a return to the squad. One concern was the absence of Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie from this training session. We'll have to wait and see if that was a precaution or not. I did notice Pedro struggling towards the end of last week's game, and Destiny was taken off before the end of the game. Emerson Royal and Ben Davies can step up if necessary.

Whoever plays needs to perform at a consistently higher level than last week when commentators' views of the team's performance did not tally with mine. As always, we showed flashes of skill and genius, but we failed too often in our own half for my liking.

Wolves will present a real challenge. After all they beat us 2-1 at Molineux in November, scoring two added-time goals. Wolves' win was their third home win against Spurs in the Premier League. They have won more Premier League games at Tottenham (4). It was the second time either team had won consecutive games since Spurs did it in Wolves' first Premier League season in 2003/04, as Wolves had beaten us at Molineux last March.

Our November defeat was only the eighth time a Premier League side have lost after leading going into the 90th minute. One of those previous occasions was when Spurs inflicted defeat upon Leicester City in January 2022. Steven Bergwijn had scored in the 95th and 97th minutes to give us a 3-2 win after James Maddison had put Leicester 2-1 up in the 76th minute.

It was the first time Ange Postecoglou had lost successive games as a manager since September 2021, with Celtic. The day before defeat at Molineux Postecoglou had been announced as the Premier League's manager of the month for the third consecutive time.

It was also the first time Spurs lost on consecutive league visits to Molineux since December 1968 in League Division One. Derek Dougan scored one of Wolves' goals on that occasion. Cyril Knowles played against his brother Peter (who later retired from football to become a Jehovah's witness), although Cyril was replaced by substitute Jimmy Pearce. It was not the first or last occasion that the two brothers opposed each other in such fixtures.

Cyril Knowles sadly died well before his time in 1991. There is an active Facebook group called "The Peter Knowles Appreciation Society". I believe that Peter Knowles has been spotted quite recently, selling "The Watchtower". The Knowles brothers feature in today's Times football quiz.

Midfielder Matheus Nunes made his Wolves debut in our last home game against the side in August 2020 when we won 1-0. That goal was scored by Harry Kane. It was his 185th Premier League goal which meant he was the highest scorer of Premier League goals for one club. It was also Spurs' 1000th Premier League home goal, following four other ever-present clubs, Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Chelsea.

Nunes had one season and a bit for Wolves before Manchester City paid £53 million (plus add-ons) for a player who has made 10 Premier League appearances for the "Sky Blues" this season. Half of those appearances have been as substitute.

Spurs have now scored in their past 36 Premier League games, a run that stretches back to March last year, and marks the second-longest scoring streak in the competition's history, behind only Arsenal in 2002.

After Brennan Johnson's late goal last week, Spurs have now scored three winning goals in added time at the end of games so far in this Premier League season: the most in the division along with Manchester United.

They were now the only team to both recover 15 or more points from losing positions and drop 15 or more points from winning positions so far in this Premier League season.

Wolves coach Gary O'Neil took a lot of personal satisfaction from his side's defeat of his former employers Bournemouth last October. Under O'Neil, Wolves have lost just three of their last ten league games, and until Chelsea's Monday night win, Wolves had climbed to the top half of the table. Tomorrow's game will be tough, but I'll take us to win!

Anthony Taylor is one of the most experienced of our referees and will be in charge of Spurs for the 45th time since his first Spurs match in December 2010. Only Stuart Attwell of our current serving referees pre-dates Mr Taylor with regard to Spurs games. Mr Taylor's only other Spurs game this season was our 2-0 home win over Fulham on a Monday night in October. We won 2-0 with goals by Son and Maddison. That would do me tomorrow!

* Did you know - When Saturday comes was the title of a 1996 football-related film, starring Sheffield United fan Sean Bean, famous for his TV portrayal of "Sharp".
