Spurs buzz against "The Bees"
Spurs fans saw a home league win for the first time since the opening day of the season. A win at last! It just remains a mystery really as to why we had to wait this long for the energy, effort, movement, skill, and excitement demonstrated here against Thomas Frank's old team.
Xavi Simons starred. We've known all along what a footballer he is and today he capped a fine overall performance with an assist for Richarlison's goal, and a superb individual goal.
Brentford's poor away form continued. They've managed one away win (against West Ham) in 8 attempts to date. At home it's a different story and we'll be testing that form in a quick return on New Year's Day.
Thomas Frank made five changes after the morale-boosting draw at Newcastle with Van de Ven, Spence, Gray, Xavi, and Richarlison coming in for Danso, Udogie, Bergvall, Sarr and Johnson.
Apart from Xavi, there were good performances all round with Romero and Van de Ven masterful at the back against the prolific Thiago. Both full backs gave it their all, particularly going forward. All the team put in all their effort. Kudus had the better of both the first half, and second half left backs for Brentford. The team performance was so refreshing to watch, and the crowd rewarded them appropriately.
Spurs kicked off and played towards the North Stand. Pedro Porro won a corner on the right after Kudus's pass. After the corner, a left-footed cross by Kudus was headed just off target by Van de Ven. Referee Rob Jones and his officials upset the home fans several times with their decision making, the first occasion being when the ball seemed to go off Collins for a corner, but a goal kick was given.
Romero made an important interception against Thiago's breaking run. Spurs launched another attack and Richarlison's shot was blocked after another Kudus cross. Spurs won a couple of successive corners. Kolo Muani battled near the bye-line to the left of goal and the ball fell to Xavi, whose shot was well off target.
Richarlison lost out to Collins who released Thiago with a long clearance. Vicario saved to his left and Spurs cleared the corner.
Former Liverpool keeper Kelleher cleared from the feet of Muani after a good ball from Bentancur, but Spurs soon opened the scoring. Pedro Porro hit a great ball down the right channel, which was chased and crossed by Xavi, allowing Richarlison to score at the back post with his left foot. "Richie" is our top scorer with 6 league goals. The first two were scored in our last home win against Burnley.
Richarlison was fouled by Kayode, who was booked and after the free kick, Kudus crossed. The ball was headed out to Xavi, who fired over. Spurs won two more corners and after the second, Romero headed down to Muani, whose effort was saved by Kelleher.
Spurs still had a tendency to turn attacking positions into defensive play, but Xavi won the ball back just inside his own half with a good tackle and a bursting run which left Brentford shirts in his trail. Xavi made it all the way to the box with a skilful determined run, beating Kelleher with an excellent low right-footed finish inside the keeper's right post. We all stood to applaud him!
Keith Andrews replaced the booked Ajer with Henry at half-time. Kudus enjoyed his game in both halves.
Muani and Spence had an early attack with Spence getting close enough to shoot, but Kelleher blocked him. Kudus took advantage of a defensive error, but Kelleher saved his left-footed shot. At the other end Van de Ven made a great tackle in the Spurs box to prevent Thiago from shooting. Schade was booked for his foul on Xavi, who was on the charge down the right wing.
Not for the first time, Micky van de Ven charged forward and passed to Xavi, who in turn fed the ball to Pedro Porro. His cross was just a little in front of Richarlison and passed out of play.
Muani put Kelleher under pressure and the ball fell to Richarlison, who tried to tee up Xavi. Kelleher recovered and held the shot on goal.
There were chances for Spurs to increase their lead in the last half-hour, but they were generally happy to retain control of the game. Kudus had the ball in the net from close range after Odobert's shot was saved, but VAR confirmed an offside. Spence had led that attack with another burst of energy and pace down the left. He showed that desire right to the end of the game.
Xavi had sent Spence away down the left wing with another good pass, and when Spence passed into the centre of the area, substitute Sarr seemingly had a great chance to score, but couldn't get his feet right. Spence blocked Thiago twice at the other end. Thiago had a decent chance towards the end of the game but hit the side netting.
Spurs are back in the top half. Let's hope we stay there! On Tuesday we host 31st-placed Slavia Prague, who are without a win in the Champions League phase. That is surely an eminently winnable game for us, before we travel to Nottingham next Sunday for a more challenging prospect.
