Beware Spurs! Villa have their mojo back!

Welcome to N17

After the second international break of this season (there will be more!), Spurs welcome Unai Emery's Aston Villa to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for Sunday's 2pm kick-off.

After an awful start to the season in which they failed to even score a goal in their first four games, and failed to win in their first 6 matches in all competitions, Villa have demonstrated a return to form with wins in their last four matches, two of which have been in the Europa League.

Villa missed out on a 25/26 Champions League place on goal difference only, after Newcastle claimed the bonus fifth Champions League spot with the same number of points (66), but with a significantly better goal difference.

Spurs will need to find their best form on Sunday, as Villa have their mojo back!

In July this year, Villa were one of five teams who were fined by UEFA for breaching financial Fair Play regulations. Aston Villa were fined €11 million. The other teams punished were Barcelona, Chelsea, AS Roma and Lyon.

Villa were also hampered domestically regarding their ability to operate fully in the transfer market. In the second half of last season, Villa's form benefited from the loan of PSG's Marco Asensio, who has now joined Fenerbache. They also took on Manchester United's Marcus Rashford, and he's now on loan with Barcelona. Jacob Ramsey was sold to Newcastle for a big fee. Leon Bailey has gone on loan to Roma.

Villa have taken on centre-back Victor Lindelof, whose contract ended with Manchester United, and they've also signed United's Jadon Sancho on loan. Midfielder Harvey Elliott has also come on loan, in the knowledge that game time was going to be hard to come by at Liverpool. You might remember that a very immature Elliott (once at Fulham) was disparaging about none other than Harry Kane.

Villa did pay good money for 24-year-old forward Evann Guessand from Nice. Ivory Coast international Guessand scored 12 league goals for Nice last season, but has yet to make his mark for Villa this season. Ollie Watkins has one club goal to his name so far this season. Watkins scored for England against Wales last Wednesday, but had to with draw through injury. Donyell Malen (signed in January from Borussia Dortmund) scored both Villa's goals against Burnley and club captain John McGinn (now a veteran of 250 club league appearances) has also weighed in with a couple of cracking goals in the Europa League.

There was some unsettling talk of Argentinean World Cup winning goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez leaving, but he has stayed with the Villa Park side.

Aston Villa have won five of their past seven league and cup meetings with Tottenham, including a 2-1 FA Cup triumph at Villa Park last February. However, Spurs have won two of the last four meetings, including last season's home game by an impressive 4-1 scoreline.

Unai Emery took charge of his 100th Premier League game as Villa manager in our away game last season. He won 54, drew 21 and lost 25 of those matches, with his side scoring 174 goals and conceding 136. Emery achieved the most wins by a Villa manager in his first 100 top-flight games at the club.

When Ollie Watkins scored his 75th Premier League goal for Aston Villa last season, he overtook Gabriel Agbonlahor to become the club's highest goalscorer in the competition. Three of those 75 goals came against Tottenham but none have been scored at Villa Park.

Richarlison made his 250th Premier League appearance in our 2-1 win at Leeds two weeks ago to become the fifth Brazilian to reach that milestone, along with Willian, Ederson, Fernandinho and Roberto Firmino. He became the 300th player to play 250 games.

On Monday night Ben Davies captained Wales, lining up at left-back to win his 100th cap and becoming the fourth Welshman to reach three figures after Gareth Bale, Chris Gunter and Wayne Hennessey. Three of those four players have played for Spurs with Hennessey the exception. Sadly Ben withdrew with injury after 51 minutes. Whilst he has yet to make a Spurs start this season, Ben has been on the bench 8 times, and his experience would be missed should he not be fit this weekend.

Spurs paid for a charter flight from Miami for club captain Cristian Romero after his involvement in a friendly against Puerto Rico in the early hours of Wednesday. Argentina won 6-0. Romero was an unused substitute. Presumably, "Cuti"'s international colleague and opponent on Sunday Emiliano Martinez had to make other arrangements!

Djed Spence won his second and third England senior caps during this break and impressed in two 90-minute performances in the wins over Wales and Latvia. It's too early for team news, but I'm hoping all contenders for Sunday's team are fit and fine. My optimistic prediction is for a 2-1 home win!

Simon Hooper referees us for the 13th time, and for the second time this season. Mr. Hooper was in charge of our home defeat against Bournemouth in August. Let's hope for better luck this time!
