Frank seeking third opening away win
Thanks to Cassim Patel for the picture.
Thomas Frank's Spurs travel south to Brighton's Amex Stadium for a second consecutive away Premier League game. Having won his first two away league games, Frank is seeking to emulate Mauricio Pochettino, who in 2017 won our first four away games of that season against Newcastle, Everton, West Ham and Huddersfield.
Despite Brighton's mixed form so far this season, Spurs will have their hands full here against a side which has achieved commendable results in their last six league games. One of those was the 4-1 win at Tottenham in May when we were still celebrating our Europa League success. That win for "The Seagulls" was preceded by a 3-2 win over Liverpool, who had already secured their second Premier League title.
Three of Brighton's seven goals in those last two games of the season were scored by Jack Hinshelwood who is a fourth generation footballer, as disclosed in this preview of our February 2024 match. Hinshelwood was one of two players who had to be substituted in the first half of last week's defeat at Bournemouth due to injury. The other was summer signing (from Club Brugge) Max de Cuyper. Both players will face tests before our game, which kicks off at 3pm tomorrow.
Despite defeat in that south coast "derby" and another at Everton's new stadium, Fabian Hurzeler's side achieved a fine win against Manchester City. One of Brighton's scorers was former City player 39-year-old James Milner. Milner was a very late substitute in our 4-1 defeat in May, but signed a new one-year contract.
Milner, who will be 40 in January has chosen to change his Brighton shirt to number 20 to honour Diogo Jota, with whom he played at his last club Liverpool. "I wanted to do it as a mark of respect and pay tribute to Diogo. I was fortunate to play with him, and he was a great friend. It will be a great honour to wear his number."
When Milner scored from the penalty spot against City last month, he became the oldest player to score a penalty in the Premier League at 39 years and 239 days. Teddy Sheringham, at 40 years and 268 days, remains the oldest Premier League scorer on record (for West Ham v Portsmouth on Boxing Day 2006).
Last season Brighton achieved their first ever league "double" over Spurs in 13 seasons of league meetings since 1977. It was also the first time "The Seagulls" beat us in consecutive matches. In both league games, Spurs surrendered a first half lead.
We have won three of our four Premier League games this season, keeping a clean sheet in each victory - it is as many clean sheets as we had managed in the previous 26 league games.
Pedro Porro has played 87 Premier League games but never been involved in a 0-0 draw, an all-time record without featuring in one. It's the second-longest start to a Premier League career without a 0-0, with only Mikael Silvestre going more games from his debut without a goalless one (134 matches before featuring in Man Utd 0-0 Arsenal in September 2003).
21-year-old Gambian winger Yankuba Minteh looked a handful in last week's game at Bournemouth. Brighton's goal was scored by Kaoru Mitoma, who is now in his fourth season with Brighton. Danny Welbeck will be 35 in November, and has yet to score this season.
It's too early for team news, but I anticipate little change to the Spurs line-up. There will be plenty of opportunity for rotation in next Wednesday night's Carabao Cup game against League One Doncaster. My optimistic prediction is a 2-1 win for Tottenham!
Did you know? - Brighton's first ever victory over a Tottenham side was 120 years ago on 16th September 1905, when the two teams played in the Southern League. The Spurs side that day included 1901 FA Cup winners Sandy Tait and Tom Morris, along with future Huddersfield and Arsenal manager Herbert Chapman.
Chris Kavanagh will referee Spurs for the 20th time tomorrow. Mr Kavanagh's first game in the middle for a Spurs game was at The Amex Stadium on 22nd September 2018 when we won 2-1, thanks to goals by Harry Kane and Erik Lamela. Erik recently retired due to a chronic hip injury and has returned to a former club - Sevilla - to take up assistant coaching duties.
