Back to basics, but can Spurs win?
Thanks to Greg Smith for this picture
After the high of our midweek Champions League win with a sorely depleted squad, against Borussia Dortmund and the knowledge that progress in Europe is guaranteed, we return to a crucial bread and butter game in the Premier League.
Scott Parker's Burnley have been in the relegation mix since September and are desperate for a win, as they are currently eight points from safety. Spurs are ten points above 18th-placed West Ham and really need a win to extend that gap with tough games to come against both Manchester sides, Newcastle and Arsenal.
The bad news of yet another long term injury suffered by Lucas Bergvall in our midweek game is countered by the good news that a possible 6 enforced absentees from the Dortmund game could return to the squad for tomorrow's match (3pm). Micky van de Ven, Conor Gallagher, Yves Bissouma, Mathys Tel, Pape Sarr are definitely available and even Joao Palhinha could be fit to play. Dominic Solanke, Destiny Udogie came through the Dortmund game okay and Xavi (who played with a swollen ankle) should also be okay.
Spurs scored their 200th league goal against Burnley in our opening day 3-0 win. We have our best points per game record (2.16) against Burnley compared to all other current Premier League sides.
Last season, Burnley went through an entire Championship campaign without conceding more than a single goal in any fixture; in their first match back in the Premier League, they conceded three. They've conceded three or more in six games since.
Only once before (6th August 2022) have Spurs begun the season with victory by a three-goal margin, but they have never lost in all 10 of their Premier League home games against Burnley - their best record against any club. In fact, we've won 9 of our 10 home league games against Burnley.
Burnley haven't won a Premier League game since beating Wolves 3-2 away on 26th October. The only game they've won in that time was their 5-1 home win in the FA Cup against Millwall two weeks ago. They've been drawn at home to Mansfield in the fourth round next month, when they might face Spurs loanee, 19-year-old Ollie Irow who scored two goals on his football league debut last week. One of those was a cracker.
Spurs are likely to be facing one of their former Academy players at Turf Moor - Marcus Edwards, who is now 27. Marcus played against us in European competition when with Sporting. He spent the latter part of last season on loan at Burnley, signing on full terms last May. Marcus was a late substitute in our home game in August.
This season, Marcus has made 4 Premier League starts and appeared off the bench 8 times. Last week, he scored a superb equalising goal at Anfield.
35-year-old Kyle Walker has started 21 of Burnley's league games this season. It will be 9 years this July since he signed for Manchester City, where he won trophies galore.
Son Heung-min scored the last of his five Spurs hat-tricks in our 5-2 away win in September 2023. This was our highest score at Turf Moor in 60 league and cup meetings. It was also the last time we played at Turf Moor. Wilson Odobert was an unused substitute for Burnley that day and will be hoping to start against his old team tomorrow.
I'm hoping to see Spurs play in the style and at the pace they showed in the first half against Dortmund. My optimistic prediction is for a 2-0 win.
Peter Bankes is our referee for the second time this season and the 16th time in all. Mr Bankes over saw our 2-0 win away to Manchester City in August and a similar result would be marvellous here. In October 2021, Mr. Bankes was in charge when we won a Carabao Cup Fourth Round game here, thanks to a Lucas Moura goal.
Colin McDonald, whose death was reported earlier this month - aged 95 - was for the last 18 months of his life the oldest surviving England international footballer. Goalkeeper McDonald's best game was to keep a clean sheet against Brazil in a 1958 World Cup game in Sweden. McDonald made 201 appearances for Burnley between 1954 and 1959. His career was curtailed by injury. McDonald later became a scout for Bury, discovering players such as Manchester City's Colin Bell and Liverpool's Alec Lindsay and Terry McDermott.
Did you know? - Gary Mabbutt made his debut for Bristol Rovers (as substitute) in an away game against Burnley in December 1978. Gary was aged 17 at the time. After four seasons with Bristol Rovers, Gary signed for Spurs (spotted by Bill Nicholson) and made his Spurs debut in a Charity Shield game against Liverpool in August 1982.
