"We will be positive. We will attack."
After a long hot summer, which continues with our fourth declared heatwave of the year, the new Premier League season starts at last. Big-spending Liverpool open tonight (Friday) against a Bournemouth side who have been denuded of three quarters of their defence by Real Madrid, Liverpool, and PSG respectively.
Europa League winners Spurs faced their fellow Champions League contestants in Wednesday night's European Super Cup final. Spurs can be very proud of their performance and had a 2-0 lead until the 85th minute, ultimately succumbing in the penalty shoot-out.
Now we embark upon another bread and butter season in which new head coach Thomas Frank's biggest aim must surely be to finish among next season's European contenders on league placing merit, and/or a trophy, of course.
In today's early press conference, Thomas has said "We will be positive. We will attack. It will be a game where we will dominate and it may take time to score. One thing is for sure, we need to perform, the fans need to perform. If the fans and the team are together, they can give energy to push the team forward."
Spurs open the season carrying crucial injury absentees in James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski. Maddison will miss most of the season with his ACL injury sustained two weeks ago in Heung-min Son's farewell game in South Korea against Newcastle. Udogie and Solanke have had next to no pre-season minutes.
Frank has indicated that Udogie is "progressing" but not yet available. Otherwise, all the squad from Wednesday's game are available. Yves Bissouma will also return to the squad.
This week, we've been linked with exciting players in Man City's Savinho and Crystal Palace's Eze, but we must wait for the outcome of any negotiations. City don't want to see Savinho go, and will definitely not want him to be playing for the opposition next Saturday lunchtime in our second game.
This will be the first time since 2010/11 that we start and end our Premier League programme at home. Our visitors tomorrow are promoted Burnley, managed by former Spurs Scott Parker. Scott was our player of the season in 2011/12 when he offered defensive skills in front of our defence.
Parker was acclaimed Championship Manager of the Season at the EFL awards in April, and was renowned for the defensive qualities of his side. The manager's third promotion to Premier League in six seasons means only Neil Warnock has taken more teams up into top flight. Fulham and Bournemouth were Parker's previous successes, but Bournemouth sacked him after a horrible 9-0 defeat at Anfield in August 2022.
Spurs are on a horrible 6-game form run in league matches, whereas Burnley won 5 and drew 1 of their closing matches in last season's Championship.
Burnley were relegated in 2024 for the fourth time in the Premier League. They became the ninth team to be relegated from the Premier League four times or more. Vincent Kompany departed for Bayern Munich in May 2024, and Parker was appointed in July last year.
Burnley's immediate return to the Premier League was confirmed on Easter Monday (April 21st) with a 2-1 win over promotion rivals Sheffield United. Leeds' promotion was confirmed on the same day and Sheffield United were consigned to the play-offs where they lost to Sunderland. Burnley are the third team Scott Parker has taken from the Championship to the Premier League at the first time of asking. This will be Burnley's 10th Premier League season in all, and their ninth in the last twelve seasons.
This is only the second time we have opened a league programme with a game against Burnley. The previous occasion was seventy years ago on Saturday 20 August 1955 at White Hart Lane. We lost 1-0 and had a poor season.
In 107 league meetings, this is just the fifth August match against the Lancashire side. On 27th August, 2017, we played at home against Burnley at Wembley, and drew 1-1. Dele Alli had opened the scoring in the 49th minute and Chris Wood scored an added time equaliser. Chris Wood (now 33) is at Nottingham Forest, via Newcastle. Ben Mee was in Sean Dyche's side and would spend three seasons at Thomas Frank's Brentford.
Another August meeting was our second game of the season on 25th August, 1964 at Turf Moore. The game was drawn 2-2 and after Burnley took a two-goal lead Jimmy Greaves and Frank Saul gave us parity. The return game was played a week later, when Saul scored a hat-trick. Terry Dyson scored as well in a 4-1 win.
We have our best points per game ratio in Premier League meetings against two of the promoted sides. We have averaged 2.16 points in 32 meetings with Sunderland and 18 matches against Burnley.
In that closing run of last season, Josh Brownhill scored five goals and Dutch forward Zian Flemming scored three. They were Burnley's top league scorers with 18 and 12 goals to their name respectively.
All three of the promoted clubs have been busy in the transfer market. Goalkeeper James Trafford has returned to Man City, although apparently he is not best pleased by City's signing of another keeper Marcus Bettinelli. City are also being linked with PSG's discarded Italian international Gianluigi Donnarumma, with Ederson possibly being sold. Burnley have signed the experienced Martin Dubravka from Newcastle.
Former Spur Marcus Edwards signed for Burnley on loan in February and the deal was made permanent in May. Another (and more famous) ex-Spur, Kyle Walker, has signed from Man City after his loan spell with AC Milan.
Other summer signings include Germany U-20 goalkeeper Max Weiss, left back Quilindschy Hartman from Feyenoord, former Man Utd defender Axel Tuanzebe from Ipswich, U-21 French winger Loum Tchaouna, forward Jacob Bruun Larsen, who previously spent the 23-24 season on loan at Turf Moor, Chelsea midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu and their striker Armando Broja.
Spurs fans will be looking forward to the first league appearance of Mohammed Kudus, who has excited me during the pre-season campaign. Loan signing Joao Palhinha impressed on Wednesday and hopefully will be fit enough to start this game. Our performance and strategy against PSG gives me more confidence about this game, and I have predicted a 2-0 home win. Here's hoping! The match kicks off at 3pm Saturday.
Did you know (1)? - Jimmy Greaves appears twice in a list of 9 players who have scored 20 or more goals against one Club. Jimmy scored 24 against Nottingham Forest and 20 against Burnley.
Did you know (2)? - Wilson Odobert was signed on this day (16th August) last year from Burnley.
Michael Oliver first refereed Spurs in January 2011, and takes charge of us for the 52nd time tomorrow. Now aged 40, Mr Oliver refereed two club world cup games, Spain v France in June and aa Champions League qualifier between Nice and Benfica earlier this month.
