Tough trip to Tyneside

The Spurs Odyssey Flag

Spurs were given one of the toughest draws in the Carabao Cup Fourth Round as they face a trip to St. James' Park. This is one of four all Premier League ties.

Bearing in mind we first met Newcastle in cup competition in 1905 (we lost an FA Cup second round replay 4-0), it is somewhat surprising the two clubs have not met more often. In the 21st century there have been just three meetings. I prefer to forget the last cup meeting before the millennium!

In the league cup, we've met in just three ties. In 1976, we played a two-leg semi-final. John Pratt's goal at White Hart Lane gave us a narrow lead, but we lost 3-1 on Tyneside a week later. Terry Neill was our disliked Spurs manager. He left for the club down the Seven Sisters Road that summer and his last Spurs game was a 3-0 league defeat at home to Newcastle.

March 16th this year was a famous day for Newcastle, who finally ended a 70-year drought regarding domestic trophies when they beat Liverpool 2-1. Until Dan Burn opened the scoring in the 45th minute, Newcastle's last Cup Final goal had been scored by Alan Gowling (in a 2-1 defeat to Manchester City) in 1976. Gowling celebrated his 76th birthday last March 16th! The Guardian's David Squires view on Newcastle ending their domestic trophy drought.

Newcastle finally gained revenge for a 3-0 FA Cup Final defeat to Liverpool on May 4th 1974. The following week (in 1974) they lost at home to Spurs 2-0, who scored through Martin Chivers and Alan Gilzean. Spurs had a UEFA Cup Final against Feyenoord still to play, and in the Newcastle game 21-year-old goalkeeper Terry Lee made his only first team appearance for Spurs.

Lee was third choice keeper behind Pat Jennings and Barry Daines. He signed for Torquay in 1975 and made a total of 118 appearances for the Devon side. Lee settled in Devon and tragically suffered a fatal heart attack when playing cricket in June 1996.

Spurs were on their way to an unsuccessful League Cup Final when we beat Newcastle 4-0 in our last cup meeting. Managed by Alan Pardew, Newcastle were on a downturn and heading for relegation at the end of the 2015/16 season.

Eddie Howe's side has had an in and out start to this season, which was hampered by the Alexander Isak saga. They are a real threat though. Whilst they sit 12th in the Premier League (only five points behind third placed Spurs), they have won two of their three Champions League games. 6ft 5inch Nick Woltemade has scored six club goals, and is to be respected. Players such as Guimaraes and Gordon can always produce magic moments and this game in front of a vehement home crowd will be difficult.

Travelling fans have not been considered as this game kicks off at 8pm tomorrow (Wednesday). The two teams meet again in midweek (Premier League) in early December.

Once again, I don't anticipate any changes to the Spurs squad with none of Romero, Udogie or Solanke ready for action as yet. No doubt both coaches will have the weekend fixtures in mind regarding their team selection. I cannot be confident about a Spurs win, but as always I hope for the best.

Willie McFaul, who passed away earlier this month was a Northern Ireland and Newcastle goalkeeper. He made 388 club appearances between November 1966 and September 1976. Because of Spurs' Pat Jennings superiority, McFaul won just six international caps. Known as "Iam", McFaul played in Newcastle's 1969 Inter-City Fairs Cup winning side. He was in the FA Cup Final side which was beaten 3-0 by Liverpool in 1974.

Chris Kavanagh referees Spurs for the 21st time. In December 2023, he was in charge of a "Super Sunday" game when Spurs beat Newcastle 4-1 (at home) and Richarlison scored two of our goals. There's good omen!
