Time for Spurs to take home advantage
Once again we face opponents who we have never previously met in competition. FC Copenhagen are the reigning champions of Denmark's "Superliga" and have won that title 15 times this century and a record 16 times in all. They have finished runners-up seven times too. The club have also won the Danish Cup 10 times, including last season.
The club was only founded in 1992, but is based upon a combination of two clubs, both of who had a long history. FC Copenhagen's home strip is all-white with a blue trim. Their away strip is dark grey and black.
"The Lions" first competed in Europe in 1992 and their first Champions League game was a 1-0 home win against Manchester United. Copenhagen have become the most successful Danish club in Europe reaching the group stage of the Champions League seven times, advancing to the round of 16 twice.
Copenhagen's European campaign this season began on 22nd July with a second qualifying round tie against Drita from Kosovo, who they beat home and away. Next came Malmo, who were convincingly beaten, before the play-off game against Basel.
As you can see above, Copenhagen have managed just one draw in their three games of the league phase so far and they sit 32nd in the 36-team table. Of course, they will be desperate to get something from this game, but with their last three games against Villarreal, Napoli and Barcelona, our opponents look like struggling to reach the play-off phase.
Spurs need to take full advantage of this game and our next home match against Slavia Prague.
Copenhagen's league programme also began in July and they've played 14 matches so far. Currently, they sit fourth in a 12-team table, 5 points behind the leaders. The Danes had a 4-1 away Cup win against a second tier team (Hobro) last Wednesday and a 3-2 win at home to Fredericia on Saturday. However, they lost three and drew two of their preceding five games. Two of the defeats were in the Champions League.
One familiar name in the Copenhagen squad is former Southampton man 31-year-old Mohamed Elyounoussi. He's in his third season here and has 54 caps for Norway. The last of these caps was 19 months ago.
Elyounoussi shares league top scoring status for the club on 4 goals with Swede Jordan Larsson. Copenhagen's three goals on Saturday were scored by another Swede Victor Claesson (pen), Youssoufa Moukoko (who scored a hat-trick against Hobro) and centre-back Junnosuke Suzuki.
Last season, Copenhagen played in the Europa Conference League and lost at home and away to Chelsea (3-1 on aggregate) in the quarter-finals. That was their fourth successive defeat against Premier League opponents.
Spurs are unbeaten in 21 home European games (W17 D4) and have lost only one of their last 15 European matches (W8 D6), with the penalty shoot-out defeat by Paris Saint-Germain in August's UEFA Super Cup counted as a draw.
We must be clear favourites to win and I'm taking our margin of victory to be by two clear goals.
Referee Erik Lambrechts and his team of officials are from Belgium. Mr. Lambrechts is in charge of Spurs for the first time. He is quite a high profile official having taken charge of four European games and two internationals. Last year he refereed England's 5-0 win over the Republic of Ireland, and in March Manchester United's Europa League home win over Rangers.
