A chance to earn some respite in February

Two teams who have yet to win a domestic game this year meet in this final league phase game of the Champions League. Those two teams are in opposite ends of the 36-team table. Spurs, who did at least manage a win last week against Borussia Dortmund have a chance of earning a place in the round of 16 with a win, and have already guaranteed at least a place in February's play-off round.

On the other hand, Eintracht Frankfurt cannot escape elimination, even with a win. Some might think that with nothing to play for, the Bundesliga side might not put themselves out, but they have a fervent crowd and I am sure they will give everything they've got to prove themselves capable of beating a Premier League side.

A Spurs win would give us some welcome respite next month with tough league games to play and much-needed points to be gained.

We've played Eintracht Frankfurt 6 times in competition. In 1982 we beat them 3-2 on aggregate in the quarter-finals of the European Cup Winners' Cup, before losing narrowly to Barcelona in the semi-final. In 2022, Antonio Conte's Spurs beat Oliver Glasner's Eintracht side 3-2 at home after a goalless draw at their Commerzbank Arena. We lost narrowly to Milan in the Round of 16. Glasner's side had won the 21/22 Europa League on penalties against Rangers, after disposing of West Ham in the semi-final.

Glasner went to Crystal Palace in 2023 and won them their first major trophy last year. Now he's leaving this summer, and maybe Spurs might be interested in his services.

Randal Kolo Muani played for Eintracht in that 22/23 season and scored 15 Bundesliga goals plus two in the Champions League, but not against Spurs.

Last season, we drew 1-1 at home, then beat the German side 1-0 away in the Europa League quarter-final, thanks to a penalty awarded (thanks to VAR) for a foul by goalkeeper Santos on James Maddison, and scored by Dominic Solanke. Maddison had to be withdrawn and was replaced by Kulusevski. They were two of nine of our 18 squad members that day who will not be involved tomorrow night.

Last season's Eintracht side included Hugo Ekitike, who moved to Liverpool last summer. Eintracht were also coached by Dino Toppmoller, but club and coach parted ways on 18th January. 32-year-old Dennis Schmitt has taken temporary charge of the club.

Eintracht qualified for this Champions League campaign after last season's Bundesliga third place finish and started the season well, winning their first two league games, and beating Galatasary 5-1 in their first Champions League game. That remains their only win in the seven games played so far. They shipped five goals against both Atletico Madrid and Liverpool. In December, Eintracht lost 6-0 to Leipzig in the league.

Eintracht Frankfurt have failed to win any of six games played since 20th December, but they have scored in every game. Their top scorer is Jonathan Burkardt, but he hasn't played since late November and won't be available tomorrow. Right back Elias Baum is also injured. On Saturday, Eintracht lost 3-1 at home to Hoffenheim and they've slipped to eighth place in their league table.

The Spurs team news is worse than anticipated. Micky van de Ven didn't travel - "a minor thing" - but will possibly play on Sunday against Man City. Pedro Porro suffered a hamstring injury and is out for 4 weeks. Kolo Muani and Wilson Odobert had a road accident on their way to the airport yesterday (Tuesday) morning, but are fine. It looks as if Romero is okay, despite sitting out the very end of the Burnley game. Both Palhinha and Sarr are in the squad.

Frankfurt are missing six players including forward Can Uzun who suffered a thigh injury last weekend. All 18 games kick off at 8pm (GMT) tonight. Let's hope Spurs can get a special win.

The match referee is Jesus Gil Manzano. He and his officials all hail from Spain. Senor Manzano has refereed Spurs before, but as long ago as December 2020 when we beat Antwerp 2-0 in front of the lucky 2,000 fans who were allowed into the stadium under Covid regulations. Gareth Bale featured for Spurs on that day, during his second (one season) spell at the club.
