A day to remember

The Spurs Odyssey Flag

"The great fallacy is that the game is first and last about winning. It's nothing of the kind. The game is about glory. It is about doing things in style, with a flourish, about going out to beat the other lot, not waiting for them to die of boredom." - Danny Blanchflower

Tomorrow's FA Cup Third Round tie at home to Aston Villa (5.45pm - BBC) will be a day to remember.

Firstly, we will be remembering and mourning the great Martin Chivers, who died suddenly this week. Last Sunday, he was performing his usual hospitality duties at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. On Wednesday we learned of his passing, and our players wore black armbands at Brentford. Tomorrow, the stadium will stand to pay Martin the full respect he is due. If you haven't read it yet, Norman Giller's tribute tells Martin's footballing story. One of Martin's many Spurs highlights was to score both goals in our 1971 League Cup victory against (then) third division Aston Villa.

Secondly, you might like to remember the legendary Spurs double captain Danny Blanchflower. The 100th anniversary of Danny's birth will be next month on 10th February. Danny was signed by Spurs from Villa in 1954. He'd scored a penalty against Spurs for Villa on the first day of that 1954/55 season. Eddie Baily had been one of Spurs scorers in a 4-2 win and was of course Bill Nicholson's right-hand man in the double season and beyond, working with Danny Blanchflower and later - Martin Chivers.

Spurs beat Aston Villa on their path to FA Cup victory in both 1961 and 1962. Danny Blanchflower played in both games, and scored in the second. Sadly we lost Danny in 1993. Many years ago, Danny turned down the opportunity to be the subject of Eamonn Andrews' famous "This is your life". Spurs Odyssey contributor Norman Giller was part of the scriptwriting team, and he wrote about this episode in a May 2018 edition of his blog.

Danny's famous "Glory" quote appears at the top of this preview. We'd all like tomorrow to be remembered for a famous Spurs victory. However, our form is terrible and we are now approaching injury absences of the proportion we experienced last season. To the long-standing list that starts with Maddison, Kulusevski, and Solanke, we must now add Mohammed Kudus, one of our stars of this season. Thomas Frank says he is out until April. Lucas Bergvall is doubtful and Rodrigo Bentancur has a hamstring injury. The sale of Brennan Johnson early this month, with no replacement in sight is looking embarrassing.

Until a nasty 4-1 defeat away to Arsenal on 30th December, Villa had been on a magnificent run of 11 straight wins in all competitions, eight of which had been in Premier League matches. Morgan Rogers scored 6 goals during that run and has surely booked his place in the England World Cup squad. Ollie Watkins has found his scoring form too with four goals in the last three games. Villa are level on points with the only other challengers to Arsenal in the title race, but stumbled at Selhurst Park on Wednesday, drawing 0-0.

Villa's eleven-game run did not include their league win here in October when we lost 2-1. Rogers scored in that game too.

Neither team have a midweek fixture next week, so can give their full attention to this game - one of four all-Premier-League ties. I don't fancy our chances.

We met Villa (away) in last year's fourth round. Villa won and progressed to the fifth round for the first time in a decade. Spurs' exit meant a minimum of 35 years between FA Cup final appearances and wins. Villa reached the semi-final for the first time since 2010, but lost 3-0 to the eventual winners Crystal Palace. Villa lost a semi-final 3-0 against another London club - Chelsea - in 2010. Like Palace, Chelsea also went on to win the Final.

Between us we've won the FA Cup 15 times. Spurs have won 8 times, but not since 1991. Villa's last win was as long ago as 1957, but they appeared in the final as recently as 2015, losing 4-0 to Arsenal.

Villa's previous FA Cup Final appearance was in 2000 when they lost 1-0 to Chelsea. Roberto di Matteo scored that goal and had a brief spell as Villa manager at the start of the 2016-17 season, when Villa had been relegated to the Championship.

Remember, there are no replays, so we face the potential of extra-time and penalties. There will be no VAR either. I've booked a later train home, but I fear we will be beaten within the 90 minutes. If that happens, I'll console myself by reading the recently published "When the year ends in one" by Ewan Flynn. We might have to live on that memory of 1991 for some years yet. Of course, I hope I have to eat my words.

Craig Pawson is our match referee for the 37th time. His last Spurs game was the 3-0 win away to Everton. How did that happen?
