Let's hope it's as good as the last one!
Spurs face their second Saturday 12.30 kick-off of the season. If tomorrow's result is as good as the last one (2-0 at The Etihad!), we'll be more than happy.
The last time Spurs visited Elland Road was on the last day of the 2022/23 season and we won 4-1! Harry Kane scored his last two Premier League goals and Lucas Moura rounded the game off with a fine farewell goal. Let's hope this visit is as good as the last one!
Spurs won 4-0 at Elland Road the year before when Son scored from a Harry Kane pass to secure the record 37th combination between the two players. That figure reached 47 in the following year's game. The February 2022 game was Marco Bielsa's last game in charge at Leeds. He now coaches the Uruguay national team which of course features our own Rodrigo Bentancur. That 4-0 win was also a 12.30 kick-off!
Jesse March replaced Bielsa and the following season Javi Gracia and in desperation Sam Allardyce had short spells in charge. Those changes did not keep Leeds in the Premier League. Sam Allardyce has finally retired and these days is often seen sitting next to Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford. Daniel Farke took over in July 2023 and led Leeds back to the top flight this year.
Current Leeds players involved in our last meeting are centre-back Pascal Struijk, goalkeeper Illan Meslier (currently second choice to 34-year-old Karl Darlow) and Jack Harrison who spent the last two seasons on loan with Everton. Winger Crysencio Summerville has been at West Ham for the last two seasons and starred for them in a 1-1 draw at Bramley Docks on Monday night.
Spurs have won their last four games against Leeds and 10 of the last 14 meetings going back to April 2002. Despite all the good omens surrounding this fixture, Elland Road remains a difficult venue, and last week Leeds managed a creditable draw against Bournemouth, which is a better result than we managed.
One of Leeds' scorers last week was Welsh international centre-back Joe Rodon, signed by Spurs from Swansea in 2020, before being loaned then sold permanently to Leeds. Joe has now played 95 league games for Leeds and was ever present in last season's successful league campaign.
Leeds' other scorer last week was Sean Longstaff, signed from Newcastle in summer. Dominic Calvert-Lewin, rejected by Everton at the end of his contract and signed for free by Farke's Leeds, scored his first Leeds goal in their 3-1 win at Wolves - another team who did better against us than against Leeds. Also scoring his first Leeds goal in that game was Swiss international Noah Okafor, signed from A.C. Milan after a loan with Napoli.
Leeds signed 10 players in all during the summer.
Leeds battled with Leicester and Ipswich throughout the 23/24 season for an automatic promotion place and a return to The Premier League, but failed despite reaching 90 points. Leeds became the first side since Sunderland in 1997/98 to win 90+ points in a Championship season and not be promoted. Having finished in third place, three points above fourth-placed Southampton, Leeds lost the play-off final 1-0 and had to endure a second season in The Championship.
Spurs' centre-back Joe Rodon was a season-long loanee and played in that final, when Leeds gave an under-par performance. It was the sixth time Leeds had failed to gain promotion through the play-off stage. Rodon signed a permanent £10 million deal for Leeds in July 2024. Manor Solomon was a season-long loanee from Spurs last season and played a vital part in Leeds' success.
On Easter Monday (April 21st 2025) Leeds beat Stoke (Spurs loanee Ashley Phillips played for Stoke) 6-0. Later that day, when Burnley beat promotion rivals Sheffield United 2-1, both Leeds and Burnley promotions were confirmed. Both teams finished with 100 points but Leeds were convincing champions on goal difference.
It is now over 50 years since our vital 4-2 win over Leeds on 28th April 1975. Spurs had to win to stay in the first division and did that (4-2) thanks to two goals by Cyril Knowles and one apiece for Martin Chivers and Alfie Conn. At one point in the game, whilst in play, Alfie Conn famously sat upon the ball in the centre circle!
Gordon McQueen, who died in June 2023, played for Leeds and Manchester United. McQueen didn't play in the famous April 1975 Spurs win, but had played a key role in helping Leeds reach the 1975 European Cup final, scoring three goals en route. However, he missed the final against Bayern Munich after being sent off at the Camp Nou for throwing a punch at a Barcelona opponent who had spat at him.
Following our August 30th home defeat to Bournemouth, Spurs have now lost their last eight games in the Premier League immediately before an international break. We do not want that happening tomorrow. It will be a tough game, I'm hoping that Romero is okay to start, and I am sure Kudus and Simons will be starters. I am also hoping for a 2-0 Spurs win!
Tom Bramall is refereeing Spurs for just the third time. We last saw him in the middle at Anfield in April, which was not an auspicious occasion for Spurs.
