Looking for our first league double of the season!

Welcome to N17

Two teams who this week secured their top eight places in the league phase of the Champions League meet on Sunday (4.30pm - SKY) with differing aims in the domestic league. Two years ago when City came to Tottenham in the penultimate game of the season, Spurs fans were willing the opposition to win in the hope that City would thwart Arsenal in the race for the Premier League title. That hope was achieved, much to the consternation of Ange Postecoglou.

This year, City are again chasing Arsenal. The gap is four points and there are fifteen games to play. Our priority is to win the game in our quest to secure our ever-present Premier League status. As unlikely as it might seem, we are seeking our tenth Premier League double over City after our 2-0 away win back in August. It would be our first league double of this season. We won our second consecutive league game in our first two games, and haven't repeated the feat all season!

Spurs won their opening two games of a season in the Premier League for the first time since 2021-22. This was also the last time a new manager won their first two games in the division, Nuno EspĂrito Santo.

This was the sixth time under Pep Guardiola that Manchester City had trailed in a home game in the Premier League by two or more goals at half-time; now three times versus Tottenham Hotspur, including three of the last four (also January 2023 and November 2024).

In our 2-0 win at Manchester City, we scored our 850th away goal in the Premier League.

We struck our 849th and 850th goals on the road to become just the fifth side in the history of the competition to reach the landmark figure - joining Manchester United (1040), Arsenal (976), Liverpool (975) and Chelsea (937). These are four of the five other ever-present members of the Premier League. The remaining team is Everton, against whom we have our best record regarding those 5 teams.

This was the Citizens' first league defeat since a 1-0 away loss at Nottingham Forest on 8 March 2025; longer than any other current Premier League team.

City lost the following week at Brighton and haven't lost two consecutive league games since, although their form of late has been below City's usual standards. Last week they lost 3-1 away to Bodo/Glimt and that defeat followed a 2-0 loss in the Manchester Derby. Part of the reason for that was injured defenders and Pep has shored up his defence with the signing of England international Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace. Guehi made his debut against Wolves last week.

Antoine Semenyo has already played four games for City since they paid his £65 million release fee to Bournemouth. Semenyo's farewell gift to "The Cherries" was that added time winner against Spurs. He's already scored three goals for City, and is surely going to start this game. Semenyo had to sit out City's January Champions League games.

When Semenyo scored in his first two games for City, he became the first player to do so since Emmanuel Adebayor in 2009. Perhaps, like Adebayor, he'll next play for Spurs! Incidentally, Adebayor also scored in his first two Spurs games in September 2011.

Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was signed by City from PSG after our August meeting. Previous incumbent Ederson went to Fenerbahçe. City have just sold Oscar Bobb to Fulham. He's a Norwegian international compatriot of Erling Haaland, whose return in the last 10 games is just two goals.

Erling Haaland became the fastest player to reach 50 Champions League goals, eclipsing Ruud van Nistelrooy's record, when City beat Antonio Conte's Napoli at The Etihad in September.

Haaland scored in 12 consecutive games at all levels between 31st August and 21st October, scoring 22 goals in the process. Signed by Man City in May 2022, Haaland has now scored 105 Premier League goals in 120 league appearances. Haaland was 25 last July and will be gracing this year's World Cup.

When he scored the first of City's 5 goals at Fulham on 2nd December, Haaland became the fastest to score 100 Premier League goals, needing 111 matches, beating Alan Shearer's previous record of 124 games. Harry Kane was the third fastest to reach the figure.

Thomas Frank led his former side Brentford to a 2-1 victory at the Etihad in November 2022 and in August became just the third manager to defeat Pep Guardiola in an away league match with two different clubs. Jose Mourinho was the first with Real Madrid in 2012 and Manchester United six years later, and he was followed by Antonio Conte at Chelsea in 2016 and Spurs in 2022.

Frank's win with Brentford in 2022 was also a Saturday 12.30 game.

Micky van de Ven is "touch and go" for this game. Thomas Frank will be able to include Conor Gallagher, Radu Dragusin, Yves Bissouma and Mathys Tel in his squad. City's injury list includes impressive wingman Jeremy Doku, Ruben Dias, Josko Gvardiol, Savinho and John Stones.

City won't be sitting back and Spurs could go toe to toe in this game. I'm not seriously predicting victory, but a positive performance could bring an excellent result. Here's hoping!

Looking for a good omen? Referee Rob Jones is our referee for the thirteenth time. He also refereed our last home win in the Premier League against Brentford in December. Mr Jones also had charge of our home league cup win against City in October 2024.

Did you know?(1) - No side has scored more goals by defenders than Spurs' nine this season.

Did you know?(2) - Emile Heskey's sons Reigan (18) and Jaden (20) made their senior debuts for City in their League Cup win at Huddersfield in September.
