A day for remembrance
Thanks to Eugene Gasper for his picture
This Saturday, Manchester United will be commemorating the 68th anniversary (6th February, 1958) of the Munich plane disaster in which so many lives were lost. Spurs played Manchester City at White Hart Lane two days after the event. Danny Blanchflower played in that game, and would have been thinking about his younger brother Jackie, who survived the crash, but would never play again. The teams and their fans stood in silence and mourned a loss that will never be forgotten. We will stand in silence again on Saturday.
Danny Blanchflower, who would have been 100 next Tuesday 10th February, died in 1993. Jackie passed away in 1998, aged 65.
David Gaskell, who died in January 2025, aged 84 was one of the last of the renowned Busby Babes. Gaskell holds a unique position in United's history. At 16 years and 19 days he remains the youngest player to make his first-team debut when, in October 1956, his heroics brought his side victory in the Charity Shield. His input would prove pivotal as he helped the club to recover from the Munich air crash that killed 23 people, eight of them team-mates, in 1958.
Jeff Whitefoot, who died in 2024, aged 90, was the youngest of the "Busby Babes" and was sent by Busby to Grimsby where he played for the 1957/58 season, thus escaping the disaster at Munich. Whitefoot subsequently moved to Nottingham Forest and played in their successful 1959 Final against Luton.
I believe this to be the first occasion that Spurs will be at Old Trafford for this annual solemn occasion.
In his press conference following a 1-1 draw at Leeds on 4th January, Ruben Amorim said he was ready to move on when his contract ended in 18 months and that he came to United to be manager and not coach. The next day, the United executive obviously decided they wanted Amorim to be the ex-coach as he was sacked!
Youth coach and former player Darren Fletcher took charge for a couple of games, before former player (and a former member of the coaching staff) Michael Carrick was appointed on an interim basis until the end of the season. Carrick played for Spurs in the 2004/05 and 2005/06 seasons.
Since Carrick's appointment on 13th February, United have won three consecutive games, beginning with a 2-0 home win over their City rivals. They also became the only team to beat Arsenal at The Emirates this season with goals by Mbeumo, Dorgu and Matheus Cunha. The last two goals were crackers! Last week United beat Fulham 3-2, thanks to a 94th minute goal by Sesko. Carrick seems to have instilled a higher degree of confidence and perhaps freedom in the same set of players who struggled too often under Amorim.
There is another ex-Spur on Carrick's coaching team. Jonathan Woodgate, winning goal-scoring hero of our 2008 League Cup win over Chelsea, is one of Carrick's assistants, having worked with him at Middlesbrough in recent years.
United have climbed into fourth place, whereas last season they finished only two places above Spurs in fifteenth place.
Just like Spurs 20 years ago, United have fallen at the first hurdle in both domestic cup competitions (for the first time). They are experiencing a 40-game season, the fewest they have played since 1914-15. In that season, Spurs were relegated in bottom place. United survived - two places above them. Those who know their Spurs history know why it took us a year longer to return to the top flight after World War 1. (Just google Henry Norris, Arsenal)
Spurs and United were both relegated (in different seasons) in the 1970s, which in both cases was their last season in the second tier. I remember being in seats above the Stretford End terraces, and sitting on my hands when Ralph Coates scored the only goal of the game in March 1974. That defeat didn't seal United's relegation, but famously, a Denis Law goal for Man City did, in April.
Spurs are now unbeaten in their last eight games against United in all competitions (W5 D3). Our last defeat was in October 2022 at Old Trafford. Our draw in November ended a run of four consecutive wins, all of which came last season.
Our points per game record remains low at 0.8 in 67 Premier League meetings. That record is only marginally better (0.87) in all our league meetings.
In his 165th Premier League appearance, Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes received his first ever red card in their home defeat to Tottenham last season. He was the first Man Utd captain sent off at Old Trafford since Wayne Rooney in September 2014.
Of necessity this preview is being published before team news is announced, but I am hoping to see Romero, Van de Ven and Djed Spence return for this game (12.30pm Saturday - TNT). My personal view is that the club cannot afford to punish Cristian Romero by way of omission over his most recent remarks, seemingly criticising the board. Saturday's game will be tough, and I hope for a draw. Declan Mulcahy will be writing the Spurs Odyssey match report this week.
Did you know? - We last played both Manchester sides in consecutive games two years ago in January 2024. On that occasion we drew 2-2 away to United and then lost at home to City 1-0 in the FA Cup fourth round.
Michael Oliver will be refereeing Spurs for the 54th time. Mr Oliver will celebrate his 41st birthday later this month. His first Spurs game was as long ago as January 2011. We will be seeing him for a long time yet. Surprisingly, for such a high profile referee, this is only the second time Mr. Oliver has had charge of a game between these two teams. The previous occasion was Spurs' 2-0 win at home in August 2023.
