It's in black and white - Spurs are in dire straits
According to Bill Edgar of The Times, this is Spurs' worst 50-game league run since 1913-15 (47pts; assumes 3pts for a win throughout). The managers for this current run for 25 games each were Ange Postecoglou and Thomas Frank. We are the closest "big six" side to the relegation zone after 25 games played, since erm - Spurs in 2008-09.
Last season at this stage we were 13 points ahead of the bottom three, who we knew would be making the drop so early. Despite our 17th place finish, we had the comfort of knowing we would be safe. After West Ham's win on Saturday and our defeat at Old Trafford, the gap is down to just six points. Relegation concerns are real. We are indeed in dire straits.
We now have to add the suspended Romero and the newly injured (hamstring) Udogie to our known (alphabetical) list of injuries which are Bentancur, Bergvall, Danso (still weeks away), Davies, Kudus, Kulusevski, Maddison, Pedro Porro, and Richarlison. The one glimmer of good news is that Djed Spence is fit, so no doubt he will play at left back while Archie Gray again covers the right side. I cannot remember two seasons like this in all my time of following Spurs, with regard to injuries.
Our opponents tomorrow, (probably not in their black and white strip) have their own problems. They are in the middle of a run of 7 away games in 8 - which includes their longest ever away trip (Qarabag) in their Champions League play-off. They've never had such a run before. They've lost their last three games:-
PSG A - Drew 1-1
Liverpool A - Lost 4-1
Man City A - Lost 3-1
Brentford H - Lost 3-2
Spurs A
Aston Villa A
Qarabag A
Man City A
Newcastle also have injury problems with Joelinton, Krafth, Livramento, and Schar on their list of expected absentees. Lewis Miley and Anthony Gordon face late fitness checks, but are expected to be available. "Doctor Tottenham" will no doubt nurse Newcastle's wounds. "The Magpies" are currently four points above us and Eddie Howe says, "We need to find solutions to our defensive vulnerabilities. And we have not been clinical enough at the other end." Join the club Eddie.
I'll be hoping for a West Ham defeat at home to Manchester United as much as I hope for a Spurs win tomorrow.
Spurs have yet to win a league game in 2026 (7 games). Newcastle's last league win was 5 games ago at home to Leeds.
Romero's absence will be sorely felt. I described him as "Captain Marvel" (for younger readers, that character was originally male) after his two goals in our away draw in the league at Newcastle, the second of which was a 95th minute over head kick. Romero is suspended for our next four games. It was his second red card this season and his sixth in Spurs colours. By the time he next plays, his bank account will probably have increased by £1million (before tax), as he is said to be our highest "earner" currently. I use the term earner loosely.
Newcastle have won six of the last eight competitive meetings between the clubs.
Spurs have now won just one of the last seven league meetings with Newcastle. Newcastle won five of the other games and have won a league double over us in two of the last three seasons.
Newcastle now have the edge of superiority over us in our 61 Premier League meetings, having won two more games. They've beaten us 12 times at Tottenham.
However, we have won more Premier League points against only four other current teams in the Premier League. These are Everton (121), Manchester City (99), West Ham (97) and Aston Villa (93).
Newcastle's 20 league victories last season was their most in a top-flight campaign since 2002-03, when they won 21 games under the guidance of Bobby Robson.
Nick Woltemade was the third German player to score on his Premier League debut when he scored the only goal of Newcastle's home win over Wolves in September. Jurgen Klinsmann (v Sheffield Wednesday) and Ilkay Gundogan (v Bournemouth) were the other two such players. Klinsmann's dive was the most iconic celebration though!
There has not been a 0-0 result in meetings between these two teams since 18th August, 1971 (my 19th birthday!). Spurs have not drawn any domestic game 0-0 at home since September 2017, against Swansea. We did draw 0-0 at Brentford on New Year's Day, which was the venue for our previous Premier League goalless draw in April 2022.
This is a remarkable stat (with thanks to Colin Millar): In the 14 months (!) since December 16, 2024, Tottenham Hotspur have won more matches in European football (12, from 21 games) as they have in the Premier League (11, from 47 games).
We need three or four wins from our remaining 13 league games this season. I sincerely hope this will be one of them.
47-year-old Anthony Taylor is refereeing a Spurs official match for the 50th time. Surprisingly, this is his first Spurs game of this season, having last taken charge of us against Wolves at Molineux last April. That game did not end well for us. Mr. Taylor keeps busy at home and on the international stage. He refereed three club world cup games last summer and since then has had charge of 9 European and international matches. Last week Mr Taylor sent off West Ham's Jean-Clair Todibo for his part in the end of match melee.
