A different strategy required here, surely?

PSG v Spurs, 13.08.25

Thanks to Eugene Gasper for this picture

When Spurs nearly beat Champions League holders PSG in our August super cup meeting, we played in a 3-5-2 formation with Kudus and Richarlison up front. I was "greatly encouraged by Spurs' performance".

I also wrote:- "Every Spurs player excelled, except Vicario who had so little to do in the first half because PSG couldn't muster a shot on target. Spurs took a first half lead, doubled the score in the 48th minute, but just failed to hold on as PSG's fresh legs led to two late goals. Not for the first time, Spurs lost the lottery of the penalty shoot-out."

I was impressed with Thomas Frank, who I described as "progressive", but now, after the debacle at The Emirates, doubts are being cast regarding his abilities and suitability for the Spurs job.

Three at the back is fine, but in that super cup final our wing backs (who were Pedro Porro and Djed Spence) were scooting up and down the wings, which was rarely seen on Sunday at The Emirates. Pedro Porro will surely start tomorrow, and I fancy Spence to get Udogie's place.

A change of strategy is surely required. No-one expects us to get anything out of the game, so it is a bit of a "free hit" for Spurs, but we want to see more assertive, creative, attacking and aggressive play from our team.

Spurs are one of just five unbeaten teams in the 36-side Champions League table. PSG lost that stat three weeks ago when Harry Kane and Bayern visited Paris but it was former Liverpool star Luis Diaz who took the game by storm with two first half goals.

When we met in August, PSG were debilitated by their Club World Cup exploits, but now they again lead the French Ligue 1, two points clear of Marseille and Lens. That Bayern defeat is their one loss in 11 games, preceded by an away defeat to Marseille, who host Newcastle tonight.

PSG beat Lyon 3-2 away before the International break and last Saturday Le Havre were 3-0 victims at the Parc des Princes. Portuguese Joao Neves scored in both those games, and has scored in four of his last five games, including a hat-trick for his country against Armenia. Neves is PSG's top league scorer along with winger Bradley Barcola, who also scored against Le Havre.

Lucas Chevalier is Luis Enrique's goalkeeper of choice, having dispensed of Donnarumma to Manchester City. Chevalier is ever-present in the league and Champions League this season. He was signed from Lille in August and made his senior international debut for France this month against Azerbaijan.

Others who have played all four of PSG's Champions League games so far are Moroccan right wing-back Achraf Hakimi, left wing-back Nuno Mendes, centre-back William Pacho, midfielders Vitinha (once a Wolves loan player in 2020/21), Senny Mayulu, Warren Zaire-Emery, and forwards Lee Kang-in and Barcola.

Mendes, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Goncalo Ramos and Desire Doue have each scored two Champions League goals. PSG's team which lost to Bayern differed from that which started against Spurs by only two players. They're all much sharper now!

Wilson Odobert will be keen to play in this match. Born in the Paris metropolitan area, Wilson played for PSG's youth academy between 2017 and 2022 before signing his first professional contract with Troyes aged 17.

Brennan Johnson will not be available due to the red card he was shown in the Copenhagen game. PSG's Doue and Hakimi will be missing due to injury and Dembele is described as doubtful with a calf strain. Kolo Muani, Richarlison and Van de Ven are at risk of suspension if they get another booking.

I'm just hoping for a good game and a respectable result!

Paris have lost only two of their last eight UEFA competition matches against English teams (W5 D1).

The French club have never lost successive Champions League group stage/league phase matches at home.

Spurs are unbeaten in their last three matches against French teams in the Champions League proper (W2 D1). We are also unbeaten in their previous eight group/league matches in the Champions League (W4 D4).

Spurs have kept five clean sheets in their last seven UEFA competition matches.

Match referee Felix Zwayer and his team are from Germany. Herr Zwayer has had charge of Spurs three times previously, most famously refereeing our Europa League Final victory over Manchester United in Bilbao!

Did you know? - Yuri Berchiche (now 35) was a Spurs Academy player in 2008/09, playing mainly at left back. Born in Resideus, Spain, Yuri had one season with PSG in 2017/18, but signed for Athletic Bilbao in 2018. Berchiche was in the team which lost 7-1 on aggregate to Manchester United in last season's Europa League semi-final.
