No half measures and no half and half scarves here!

West Ham - 04.05.25

Thanks to Eugene Gasper for the picture

As we approached the last Premier League weekend, until which Spurs were unbeaten and West Ham were pointless, I imagined this game as being a top versus bottom episode, but after our home defeat to Bournemouth, and "The Hammers" surprising 3-0 win at Nottingham Forest's City Ground, there is a different perspective.

There will be no half measures and no half and half scarves here tomorrow (5.30pm SKY). West Ham have taken the unusual step of banning half-and-half scarves for this game. The move is among a number of increased security measures aimed at preventing away supporters from getting into the home sections at the London Stadium.

As always, West Ham's team and their fans will be up for this game. After all, it will be their first opportunity to give Mohammed Kudus the welcome of a "traitor" who deserted to the enemy. It will be interesting to see how well Kudus faces up to the barrage of abuse that will doubtless be coming in his direction. Kudus's teammates need to help him quieten down the home crowd and to "be up for it!"

West Ham didn't just lose their first two league games. They were thrashed both at newly promoted Sunderland, and then at home to Chelsea. Until that Forest game, Graham Potter was under severe pressure. He isn't out of the woods yet. The West Ham executives have also been feeling the anger of West Ham pressure groups.

At least we won't hear "We want Levy out!" this week. "We want Venkatesham out!" doesn't have the same ring, although ENIC still have to prove their positive intentions to the fan base. To discard our former chairman after the closure of the transfer window seemed strange timing.

Mohammed Kudus was the first West Ham player to move our way since Scott Parker. That was in 2011 after "The Hammers" last relegation. West Ham are now in their fourteenth consecutive season in the Premier League since their last promotion. Their average position across the last 13 completed seasons, starting in 2012-13, is slightly better than 11th (10.92). (Ours is 5.76) This is West Ham's longest stay in the top division since 1958-59 to 1977-78. 1978 is the year Spurs returned to the top flight after their only (one year) absence in the last 75 years. We didn't play each other in league matches between January 1977 and September 1981.

Incoming transfers were slow for West Ham this summer, and on the whole uninspiring. Firstly centre-back Jean-Clair Todibo, who had been on loan from Nice last season, signed on permanent terms. Left-sided defender El-Hadji Malick Diouf signed for £19 million from Slavia Praha. He's played 90 minutes in all games so far this season, including "The Hammers" 3-2 league cup defeat to Wolves.

Former Spur Kyle Walker-Peters was a free transfer, having reached the end of his contract with relegated Southampton. 33-year-old Callum Wilson was another freebie, having been released by Newcastle. 25-year-old Danish U-21 international goalkeeper Mads Hermansen arrived from relegated Leicester. He hasn't had the most auspicious of starts, particularly in front of his new fans against Chelsea.

Late signings were midfielders Mateus Fernandes and Soungoutou Magassa from Southampton and Monaco respectively. Brazilian centre-back Igor has arrived on loan from Brighton.

Outgoing players include Coufal, Aguerd, Emerson, Alvarez and Zouma. 35-year-old Mikhail Antonio's contract was not renewed after his recovery from a serious car accident last December. Antonio hasn't found another club as yet, but did represent Jamaica three times in the summer, albeit from the bench. 40-year-old Lukasz Fabianski has rejoined the club as a free agent, but is now third keeper.

Lucas Paqueta has been cleared of spot-fixing following a two-year investigation by the Football Association. The West Ham midfielder was charged with four counts of being deliberately booked to influence betting markets on Premier League games in May 2024, but the independent regulatory commission that heard the case has found the charges to be not proven.

Last season West Ham began a league campaign with three consecutive home defeats for the first time in the club’s history. Graham Potter has taken fewer points in his first 10 home Premier League games in charge of West Ham than any other manager in the club's history (9).

Eight goals is the most West Ham United have ever conceded across their opening two games of a top-flight season.

West Ham have not won a home game since February - against relegated Leicester. Our corresponding game last season was an underwhelming affair played in May, and finished 1-1, as did our away meetings in the previous two seasons.

West Ham are unbeaten in their last five Premier League home games against Spurs (W2, D3), their best streak since a run of six between 1995 and 2001.

However, the Hammers have won just one of the last eight encounters between the sides in all competitions.

In our 2-0 win at Manchester City, we scored our 850th away goal in the Premier League. We struck our 849th and 850th goals on the road to become just the fifth side in the history of the competition to reach the landmark figure - joining Manchester United (1040), Arsenal (976), Liverpool (975) and Chelsea (937). These are four of the five other ever-present members of the Premier League. The remaining team is Everton, against whom we have our best record regarding those 5 teams.

The London Stadium's owner (not West Ham) lost £20.9million in the financial year to June 2024 according to its accounts, underlining the financial burden of West Ham United's home on the capital's taxpayers.

The club pay rent of £3.6million a season but do not have to pay for heating, cleaning, maintenance or even the cost of goalposts and corner flags, while they keep all the ticket money and a share of the catering income.

One London Assembly member referred to it as "the deal of the century".

With Tuesday's Champions League game at home to Villarreal to follow, Thomas Frank's team selection will be interesting. Will there be debuts for late transfer window signings Xavi Simons and Randal Kolo-Muani? Will the coach rest any of his squad for Tuesday's game? With no travel involved for Tuesday's game, there should be no need to rest key players. Mathys Tel, who has been excluded from the Champions League squad, will be keen to get involved. I'm predicting a 3-1 away win!

This will be referee Jarred Gillett's 12th Spurs game in the middle. Mr Gillett had an international appointment on 5th September when he took charge of Greece v Belarus. His last Spurs away game was at Brentford in February when we won 2-0. Here's hoping!

Did you know? - Former West Ham player Alan Devonshire, now aged 69 - has managed National League side Maidenhead in two spells, between 1996 and 2003, and currently since 2015. Devonshire made 448 appearances for The Hammers between 1976 and 1990, and was a member of West Ham's 1980 FA Cup winning side.

Former Chelsea player John Dempsey (who passed away last November) also spent 1981 and 1982 as player-manager at Maidenhead United, playing his final match for that club in 1984.
