Did the Next Super Bowl Winner Play at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in October?
Whatever you think about hosting NFL games at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, it's fair to say that it represents decent business for the club and the surrounding area, bringing millions in on the game days, as well as raising the profile of Spurs globally. The now-annual event doesn't mess too much with Spurs' schedule either, as it is planned around the International Break.
Last October, we saw two games at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, although it will only be one in the coming years as the NFL targets wider international expansion beyond the UK. The first tie, held a day after Spurs' 2-1 win at Leeds, was a fairly entertaining affair between the Vikings and Browns. The second was one for the purists, a pretty drab 13-11 win for the Denver Broncos over the Jets.
Broncos backed in Super Bowl odds
Yet, with that second game, there is an increasing feeling that we might have been witnessing the emergence of a Super Bowl-winning team. The Denver Broncos have had their best season since 2015 (when they won Super Bowl 50), finally ousting the Kansas City Chiefs to win the AFC West. As it stands, they sit 3rd in the NFL Super Bowl odds, just behind the LA Rams and Seattle Seahawks. There's a decent chance they could meet one of those teams at Levi's Stadium for Super Bowl LX on 8th February.
As mentioned, the game at Spurs' home ground was quite dull, but it was also indicative of the Rams' style. They've only scored 30+ points in three games this season. They don't blow teams away, but they do control tight games and boast one of the best defences in the NFL. The famous quote from Sir Alex Ferguson, "Attack wins you games, defence wins you games," rings as true for American football as it does for association football.
Of course, it's not going to be easy. This season's NFL has been characterised by a lot of upsets and shock results. Plenty of teams expected to be in the running before the season began - the Kansas City Chiefs, Detroit Lions, Washington Commanders - have failed to make the Playoffs. The odds have chopped and changed all season, so it's somewhat exciting for neutrals as there is a sense that anything could happen.
Jags are also in the hunt
Indeed, this has been a miracle year for the NFL's unofficial London team, the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jags have been a permanent fixture in London for several years now, although the rumours that they would set up camp here permanently seem to be unfounded. Yet, they have also been unfashionable, making the Playoffs just twice since 2008. They have turned things around this year, though, and may be an interesting dark horse to make the Super Bowl. They last played the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2023 and are pegged to continue a run of games at Wembley through to 2027.
The Minnesota Vikings, New York Jets and Cleveland Browns, all of whom played in the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (along with the Broncos) in October, have all been eliminated. The Bears, Bills, and Packers are among those who have played at Tottenham in recent years and are still in with a shout in the Playoffs. But many think this will be Denver's year.
