Dream debut for Savio

The player formerly known as Savinho, and now to be called Savio was registered yesterday (Tuesday) after his signing from Manchester City. Wearing our former club captain's number 17 shirt, Savio made a dream debut when he replaced Solanke in the 71st minute. He immediately demonstrated his player-beating skills and scored an excellent solo goal in the 82nd minute. That goal made the score 4-0, and we thought he had added a second with another left-footed shot, but that effort had hit Ben Davies on its way to the net. Savio certainly made a memorable impact and was given a deserved ovation from the home crowd.

Charlton's 6,000 fans occupied two tiers in the south-east corner and were in full voice until going two down just before half-time. Until then, Spurs had still been in pre-season mode, although Mateus Fernandes (making his first competitive start for the club) was stroking the ball around and Mikey Moore was having fun on the right wing.

Spurs made five changes to the team which started at Brentford. Tonali was not involved and will presumably start against his old team on Saturday tea-time. Pedro Porro made his first appearance of the season from the bench.

Charlton made 10 changes from the side which beat West Ham at The London Stadium on Saturday. They had won their first three games, but none of their scorers were in their starting line-up.

The game was preceded by commemoration of double winner Terry Dyson, who passed away last week. Spurs legends lined up on the touchline to pay tribute, including (I believe) Terry's contemporary Cliff Jones.

Charlton kicked off and played towards the South Stand.

Spurs had an early free kick taken by Fernandes (he took our corners too), after which Charlton's Sichenje needed treatment after colliding with Tel. Sichenje and another subsequent casualty Koumetio were replaced after 15 minutes. The only significant action up to that point had been a run inside by Mikey Moore, which ended in a weak shot to the keeper.

Tel had a right-footed shot blocked after a corner from the left. Moore and Gray combined, but Gray hit a poor cross from the right. Kinsky had to make a good, diving fingertip save from Docherty's powerful shot from the left after a Charlton corner. Another effort - a header by Asiimwe - passed just wide of Kinsky's right post.

Moore won a corner on the right after a good ball from Bergvall. After the corner, a shot by Solanke was blocked and Archie Gray's effort forced a good save for another corner. Tel hit a shot wide after another corner. More Spurs pressure ended with a Fernandes shot held by the Charlton keeper.

Mikey Moore had a shot/cross blocked before he gave us the lead, after taking Bentancur's pass. Mikey cut in from the right and beat Brooks with a low left-footed shot inside the right post. It was his first club goal since against Elfsborg in January 2025.

Fernandes demonstrated skill on the turn before a pass to Moore, who forced another corner. After that corner, the ball fell to Solanke in a patch of space. He turned and fired home convincingly!

There were no changes at the start of the second half. Spurs kicked off and played towards the South wall. Mikey Moore won a corner after a run into the box and a blocked pass. After the corner, Brooks held Tel's shot.

Spurs were now bossing the game and Bergvall had a shot blocked. Tel and Udogie combined on the left and won a corner, after which Tel's right foot shot was saved. Tel provided a chance for Gray, whose shot was saved.

Mikey Moore was fouled just outside the area on the right, but Spurs made three changes before the kick was taken. One of these changes was Kevin Danso for Bentancur. Danso scored with a header with his first touch following Fernandes' delivery. It was Danso's first club goal. He was injured in the process and needed treatment for a blood injury. He was able to carry on.

A massive welcome was given to Savio when he replaced Solanke. Savio played on the right and Tel took over in the middle. Mikey Moore moved to the left. Savio was immediately involved in a move with Pedro Porro and a shot by Tel which was saved.

Charlton had made three subs of their own and with nothing to lose played some attacking football to cheer their fans. Kinsky saved well from Leaburn and also saved low from Asiimwe's header.

Luca Williams-Barnett replaced Tel. It wasn't long before the stadium exploded with roars of delight as Savio scored his debut goal. He took a pass from Archie Gray (who was now in midfield) before his solo effort cutting inside from the right before beating Brooks with a low left-footed shot. We thought he'd done it again minutes later with a similar effort, but that had gone in off Ben Davies.

Charlton had a consolation goal when Lloyd Jones rose at the far post to head in from a corner. There was time for more Savio trickery as he teed up Pedro Porro, whose shot was well over the target.

This was our first five-goal haul since one at Burnley in September 2023 and our first at home since we scored six against Leicester in September 2022.

Our dubious reward for this win was one of the most difficult draws of the third round - away to Liverpool. That match is likely to be played on September 15th or 16th, due to Liverpool's involvement in the Champions League in the preceding week.
