Now for the fixture we all hate

Stamford Bridge, 19.05.26

Thanks to Cassim Patel for capturing this image

Spurs gained their first Premier League win of the season on Monday, and have only lost one of their last five league games. However, on Saturday tea-time (5.30pm - SKY) we face the unwelcome journey to Stamford Bridge where we have managed just one win in 34 attempts. That win came on April Fools' Day 8½ years ago when Eriksen scored a humdinger and Dele Alli scored twice in the second half. Every year since, we have revived that epic result.

Spurs have now lost their last six Premier League games against Chelsea. We'd better get this game over with before continuing our climb up the table. I hate this fixture.

In May, Chelsea appointed former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso as their manager on a four‑year contract, starting in July. The 44-year-old Spaniard was available after leaving Real Madrid by mutual consent in January, less than eight months into a three-year contract.

He previously spent three years in charge of Bayer Leverkusen, leading the German club to their first Bundesliga title in 2024, as well as the German Cup.

Confirmation of Alonso's arrival came a day after Chelsea lost the FA Cup final to Manchester City.

Chelsea lost 2-1 at Sunderland on the last day of last season and failed to qualify for Europe a year after winning the World Club Cup. Under Alonso, they have returned to form, and start the weekend in fourth place. Last week, at The Hill Dickinson Stadium, Chelsea gained their first Premier League clean sheet in 22 games since last January.

When Spurs signed Mykhailo Mudryk (on loan) and Tosin Adarabioyo on deadline day, it was the first transfer business we had done with Chelsea since 2009 when goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini joined us on a free transfer.

Chelsea seem to have some form of transfer pact with Aston Villa and signed World Cup winning goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez and England international Morgan Rogers (for £117 million) in summer, while Nicolas Jackson and Alejandro Garnacho (loan) went the other way.

Relations between Chelsea and Man City are not too great following Enzo Maresca's departure and the Enzo Fernandez transfer. The signings of veterans Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck were a surprise, but Henderson in particular has been impactive and with his two goals against Bournemouth, scored twice for the first time since 2014.

Cole Palmer has regained form, and with Rogers, has formed a successful partnership. Clearly, Chelsea have been fallible in defence and after Martinez's injury at Everton (he fractured his jaw), 21-year-old Belgian Mike Penders stepped up. Spurs have to go all out to pressurise that defence.

I was hoping that Destiny Udogie would be fit to play and to counter the pace and threat of Pedro Neto, who has scored three goals this season. However, Roberto de Zerbi has today(Friday) confirmed that Udogie is not yet fit. In his press conference, Roberto confirmed that Pedro Porro is available, and that Andy Robertson and Omar Marmoush are fit, despite their withdrawals on Monday night.

In addition to Udogie, Bergvall and Savio will also miss the game. Bentancur will serve the second of his three-match suspension. I suspect neither Maddison or Kulusevski will start the game. Conor Gallagher is likely to start against his former team.

Our pre-season game in Sydney against Chelsea (which we won) was the first time that the two sides have met outside the UK. Last year we played and beat Arsenal in a pre-season game in Hong Kong.

Reece James, the Chelsea captain, has undergone minor knee surgery and is set to be sidelined for three months.

Chris Kavanagh referees us for the first time this season. It will also be his first Chelsea v Spurs game (at home or away). Mr Kavanagh's last Spurs game was an honourable 1-1 draw at Anfield in March, when Igor Tudor his only Premier League point of his short tenure, and Richarlison scored a last minute equaliser.

At this stage of the 2016-17 season we were going through a relative bad patch of form. We drew 0-0 away to Bournemouth on 22nd October, and lost 2-1 away to Liverpool in the League Cup on Tuesday 25th October. That result has a familiar ring to it, sadly.

Bobby Tambling, who died aged 84 in June, was Chelsea's record goalscorer (202 goals) until overtaken by Frank Lampard in 2013. Tambling scored on his debut at the age of 17 in a 3-2 win over West Ham in February, 1959. Jimmy Greaves also scored in that game. Both played (on opposite sides) in the 1967 FA Cup Final. Greaves didn't score, but Tambling did score a consolation goal in the 86th minute. Spurs won that game 2-1.

Did you know? (1) - Since lifting the FA Cup in 2018, their last domestic triumph, Chelsea have won four major international competitions. Those were the Europa League in 2019, the Champions League in 2021 and the Conference League and Club World Cup in 2025.

Did you know? (2) - Chelsea's wins of 3-2 against Fulham and then 4-3 over Brighton & Hove Albion at the start of the season made Xabi Alonso the first top-flight manager since 1958 to have won his opening two league games of a spell despite conceding five goals in the process. The only previous case featured Tottenham's Bill Nicholson recording victories of 10-4 over Everton and 4-3 against Leicester City.

Did you know? (3) - Frank Blunstone, who last week celebrated his 92nd birthday, is the earliest surviving England international footballer. Blunstone, who played on the left wing, made 347 appearances for Chelsea between 1953 and 1964. He made 5 appearances for the England side between 1954 and 1956.

Addendum:- Spurs are at risk of losing a seventh consecutive London Derby game today for the first time in their history

With Coventry playing Fulham before us, it is also inevitable we will start the game in the bottom three, after Forest drew last night.
