Burnley v Watford (Match postponed)

Burnley’s application for this game to be postponed was approved by the Premier League. Burnley still had Covid issues at this time. This was the 22nd Premier League match to have been postponed so far this season.

Brighton & Hove Albion 1 Chelsea 1

Brighton had achieved a creditable draw at Stamford Bridge on 29th December thanks to a 90th minute goal by Danny Welbeck. This match was brought forward from February 8th when Chelsea will be involved in the World Club Cup. Thomas Tuchel still complained about the scheduling of the game for Tuesday, rather than Wednesday.

Danny Welbeck was a surprise starter for this game, along with Alzate, at the expense of Trossard and Maupay. Former Chelsea man Tariq Lamptey came in with Lallana injured. Tuchel switched three players with Jorginho, Hudson-Odoi and Mason Mount starting.

Brighton made a bright start with Moder going close after only two minutes. Chelsea’s first real threat came after 14 minutes. Jorginho hit a pass from the left of centre to Lukaku, who laid the ball back to Azpilicueta, whose shot was pushed out of play by Sanchez in the Brighton goal.

Few chances were being created, but Alzate lifted a nice ball into the area for Welbeck, although the striker could not make proper contact. Chelsea took a 28th minute lead with a goal somewhat out of the blue when Kante passed back to Ziyech who hit a low shot from 22 yards and the ball hit the net despite Sanchez getting a touch.

Hudson-Odoi had a chance after passes by Ziyech and Lukaku, but the shot was hit too high, just before half-time.

In the first minute of the second half, Brighton had a shot at goal after Mac Allister found Gross towards the right of the box and Gross returned the ball across the area to Welbeck, whose shot whizzed over the side netting.

Arrizabalaga made a good save from Mac Allister's right foot shot after Cucurella's pass. Mac Allister took the corner and Webster scored with powerful header. (60 minutes) Brighton were worthy of their level status.

Maupay and Trossard replaced Gross and Welbeck. Alonso wasn’t far off the target with a rocket left foot shot after 66 minutes as Chelsea played with more urgency. Chelsea were looking a bit tired though. Webster made a powerful run into the box, but his pass missed Brighton feet.

Both teams were looking for the win and Lukaku hit the side netting with a deflected shot from the left of goal. Lamptey was replaced by March and Tuchel made a triple substitution inserting Kovacic, Havertz and Werner for Jorginho, Ziyech and Lukaku. The Chelsea subs added energy and Werner had an on-target shot blocked inside the area.

Brighton drew an eleventh game, but they were well worth this point and offer formidable opposition to any team. Chelsea have dropped 16 points from the last ten games and sit third in the Premier League, without a win in their last four matches. That run would come to an end on Sunday.

Leicester City 2 Spurs 3

Leicester v Spurs, 19.01.22

No team in Premier League history has been losing a match as late as Tottenham Hotspur (2-1 at 94:52) and still gone on to win the game. Manchester City previously held the record after winning a game that they were losing on 91:14. That was the famous Martin Tyler "Aguero!" moment when City beat QPR 3-2 to seize the title.

Unsurprisingly, in view of his very late winning goals, Steven Bergwijn was voted man of the match by Spurs Odyssey readers. This was Bergwijn’s very first man of the match win since he was signed in January 2020.

We now average 1.51 points per game in 31 Premier League meetings with Leicester. Harry Kane’s goal was not only his 18th in 17 appearances against Leicester, but it was our 200th League goal against "The Foxes" in 103 League meetings, of which we have won 50.

Antonio Conte was unbeaten in his first 9 Premier League matches with Spurs.

Comments received included the following:-

Moss was at his best because he was virtually invisible.

At 90 minutes it was a good performance let down by finishing and two defensive lapses. Then Leicester wound up Bergwijn, and we won’t forget those 80 seconds. A Villa or Moura moment.

Harry Kane MOTM. That pass for winning goal was iconic! Incredible vision, Stevie still had to produce world class finish! Harry was magnificent! Best pass I have seen in 60 years of being a Spurs fan! Who will forget Hugo sprint up pitch to celebrate winning!

Brentford 1 Manchester United 3

Brentford made four changes, including that of goalkeeper Lossl for Fernandez. Lossl is on loan from Midtjylland and was making his Premier League debut for "The Bees". He had previously played in England for Huddersfield. United had two changes with Ronaldo and McTominay starting. Elanga kept his place in attack. United played in a strip resembling the old Newton Heath colours of yellow shorts and blue/green shirts.

United had a degree of pressure after winning a cheap corner, but Brentford had the first real chance of the game after 12 minutes when Mbeumo took advantage of a mistake and Jansson had a shot well saved by De Gea. In the follow-up Brentford won a corner when Janelt's shot was also saved. Bench Sorensen went close from a third corner in a sequence by Brentford. Then Norgaard hooked a left foot shot over inside the United box.

Dalot hit a shot a yard wide after 24 minutes, having taken a pass from McTominay. Brentford attacked on the break after 31 minutes and De Gea saved Jensen's shot with his leg. A follow-up shot by Toney was deflected out of play for a corner. De Gea made a point blank save from Toney in another Brentford move, but there had been an offside.

All the goals would be scored in the second half. Ronaldo had a header roll off the top of the bar within minutes of the kick-off and after the United corner Brentford broke forward rapidly leading to another save required by De Gea from a Jensen shot.

United were showing more urgency and took the lead in the 55th minute when Fred swung the ball into the area where Elanga took one neat touch before heading the ball past Lossl. McTominay hit a shot which bounced just in front of the keeper who managed to shovel the ball away.

United went 2-0 up in the 62nd minute. Ronaldo chested a ball to his compatriot Fernandes, who was unselfish when he got to the Brentford box, teeing up Greenwood to deliver the goal.

With 20 minutes remaining Mason Greenwood and Ronaldo made way for Harry Maguire and Marcus Rashford. Ronaldo didn’t look best pleased when he came off. Brentford had their moments during the game and a Toney shot on target was blocked by Varane before United put the game out of reach through a Marcus Rashford right foot shot from the right of the area after another Fernandes assist. (77 mins)

Brentford got one back with five minutes of normal time remaining. The goal was stabbed into the net at close range by Toney after United failed to clear a long throw taken from the right.

Watford 0 Norwich City 3

Norwich were looking for a win to climb out of the bottom three for the first time this season. Watford were in search of a vital win in a relegation battle which primarily involves the bottom four.

Bachmann returned in goal for Watford, as Ben Foster was absent through illness. Tim Krul was ruled out for Norwich, so Angus Gunn stepped up.

In a high tempo start to the game, Watford captain Sissoko fouled Norwich's Idah just outside the area in the second minute. Rashica's free kick hit the wall in front of The Rookery Stand.

Norwich had to make a change of midfield personnel after only 20 minutes when the injured Sorensen was replaced by McLean. Sissoko had a shot blocked in the Norwich area, but neither goalkeeper had been tested in the first half-hour. Watford had a corner after 31 minutes and one of their new signings Samir at least had a header on target, but this was easily held by Gunn. Watford’s Joao Pedro hit a shot straight at the Norwich keeper and upset Josh King, who had been waiting for a pass. Sissoko failed to make decent contact inside the area from a cross made from the right.

The first half lacked quality and chances.

Norwich took a 51st minute lead after a mistake by Watford. Pukki cut the ball back from the bye-line on the right and Sargent finished with an improvised finish. Goal-lime technology confirmed the ball had gone over the line and it stood after VAR considered whether Pukki had committed a foul before crossing the ball. Watford remain the only football league side not to have a clean sheet this season.

There was a delay in the game after a partial floodlight failure after 60 minutes play. The TV pictures suggested there was sufficient light for the game to continue but it was over 11 minutes before play did re-start.

Josh Sargent had his second Premier League goal in the 74th minute after Rashica crossed from the left and the 21-year-old American striker headed into the net to the right of Bachmann. Again, there was a VAR review to consider whether Rashica had been offside, but the goal stood.

A disastrous night for Watford became even worse when Dennis was shown a second yellow card for a high challenge on Aarons. (77 mins)

There was a degree of mayhem in the Norwich area after a Watford free kick when substitute Hernandez had one header cleared and a follow-up shot saved. 10-man Watford were giving it their all now, and after a pass from Hernandez, Joao Pedro went close with a right foot shot from 25 yards. Sissoko had the ball in the net in the 90th minute with a great hook shot from a ball crossed from the left, but he had been offside.

There were 15 minutes of added time and in the second of these Watford sub Kucka prodded a cross by Idah into his own net. More Watford fans left, and some of those remaining had their heads in their hands.

Hernandez hit the bar with a dipping shot in the eighth minute of added time. In fairness, the ten men made a better fist of trying to score than they had with 11 on the pitch.

Norwich’s second successive win took them out the bottom three at the expense of Watford. "The Canaries" had spent 52 successive Premier League games in the bottom three. Watford are looking for yet another manager, after the sacking of Claudio Ranieri was announced later over the weekend. He was Watford’s 15th manager in the last ten years.

On Tuesday 25th January, Watford officially announced 74-year-old Roy Hodgson as their latest manager. Hodgson will be assisted by Ray Lewington, wo managed "The Hornets" between 2002 and 2005.

Everton 0 Aston Villa 1

Following the departure of Rafa Benitez, Duncan Ferguson looked after Everton today. Apart from a possible negative result the presence in the Villa team of Lucas Digne and on the bench of Steven Gerrard was bound to upset the home fans. Pre-kick off a light aircraft displayed a banner addressed to Bill Kenwright referring to 22 years of failure.

Villa also started with loan signing Philippe Coutinho, and John McGinn returned following suspension. Ferguson made five changes with Jonjoe Kenny, Mason Holgate, Richarlison, Yerry Mina and Andros Townsend all returning. Allan, Keane, and Coleman were on the bench. There was no place for recent full-back signings Mykolenko and Patterson. Duncan was making quite a statement and of course the Goodison Park fans would be behind him. Yerry Mina was Ferguson's captain. It was Everton's 4-4-2 against Villa's 4-3-3.

Villa had a free kick over 25 yards out after seven minutes. It was taken by Douglas Luiz and his shot dipped just over the bar to the right of Pickford at the Gwladys Street End. Buendia had a shot from 22 yards saved by Pickford, diving to his right. The ball ran clear of danger.

Villa had a corner after 27 minutes from which Doucoure and Richarlison broke forward in a two on one situation. Doucoure's pass was just too far in front of Richarlison, and Martinez raced out to beat him to the ball and clear. That was the most danger the home side had offered so far.

Watkins got behind the defence to collect a high ball over the defence by Digne but hit his shot wide with Pickford closing him down. Jordan Pickford made a fantastic close range save from a Watkins header after Coutinho's cross, but it turned out Watkins had been offside. Gomes was booked in added time and after Douglas Luiz's free kick, Pickford saved a header by Coutinho. The corner was taken from the right by Digne and headed beyond Pickford by Buendia. Two of the Villa players were injured after a bottle was thrown from the crowd at the celebrating Villa players. (Cash and Digne)

In fairness, Villa had monopolised in terms of shots on goal and on target.

Everton had a free kick early in the second half, taken by Gray, but blocked by the head of Buendia. Allan was an early substitute for Andre Gomes. Anthony Gordon replaced Townsend after 55 minutes. Gordon was involved in an attack almost immediately. Demarai Gray had a shot blocked and Gordon returned the ball to the area where Richarlison's header passed just over the target.

Yerry Mina was booked for bringing Ramsey down only a yard outside the box. Coutinho took the kick, but it passed a yard over the bar. Everton had a corner at the other end with Martinez seeming to bat away Godfrey's final header on goal. Tyrone Mings also stooped and actually got a header to clear.

Doucoure had to go off with 25 minutes remaining and Onyango was his replacement, and Everton’s last substitution. Gordon hit a great cross from the right and Calvert-Lewin's contact could only put the ball wide of the target. Richarlison won a corner on the left, from which Mina headed just wide. Mina should have scored with another header after 73 minutes but headed off target.

Tempers were heightening as Villa defended strongly, packing their box in the face of constant Everton attacks with Godfrey influential. Several yellow cards were shown. Martinez had been booked for time-wasting and Villa were clearly seeking to run down the clock at every opportunity. Mings fouled Richarlison and was booked. Gordon's free kick took a deflection and was saved by Martinez at his right-hand post.

There were five minutes of added time. Villa managed this very well without much pressure by the home side, who have to keep looking over their shoulder, despite their effort, particularly in the second half.

Brentford 1 Wolverhampton Wanderers 2

This match was subject to a 19-minute delay in the first half, due to the presence of a rogue drone overhead. Raul Jimenez was absent after a training injury and Fabio Silva stepped up. Adama Traore (still being linked with Spurs) was on the bench and didn’t come on until the 75th minute. Lossl got the nod in goal again for Brentford boss Thomas Frank.

There was a nasty clash of heads leading to concussion of two Brentford players Henry and Jensen, both of whom could be replaced without affecting the usual availability of three more substitutes. Roerslev and Baptiste were the concussion subs.

The drone interruption came after 31 minutes play leading to 19 additional first half minutes.

Wolves took the lead in the third minute of the second half. He took a one-two pass from Semedo before hitting a shot into the net just inside the right post from 18 yards. It was the first shot on target of the game!

Brentford were in a good attacking position when referee Peter Bankes halted play and showed a red card to Tote Gomes for his foul on Ajer. VAR suggested he look at the monitor and the card was amended to yellow. From the free kick, hit deep by Mbeumo, Ivan Toney hit the ball first time into the net back across the keeper. Toney was boasting a new short hairstyle. (71 mins)

Ruben Neves scored a 78th minute winner for Wolves after a good team move where Moutinho passed forward to the bye-line where Semedo cut the ball back and there were passes by Ait-Nouri and finally Moutinho again. Neves’ shot was a right-footer from the edge of the area inside Lossl’s left post.

Traore had the ball in the net with a good shot in the sixth minute of added time, but that was dismissed for offside by VAR. There were arguments between opposing players at the final whistle, with Moutinho a target. Frank joined in and was initially shown a yellow card and when he turned his abuse upon the referee this was upgraded to red.

Leeds United 0 Newcastle United 1

Newcastle gained a precious second win of the season with the only goal of the game. The win took them above Watford.

Dubravka made a good save after 11 minutes from James at the end of an attack where Rodrigo had crossed from the left and Raphinha pulled the ball back for James to shoot. Shelvey hit a powerful left foot shot from 18 yards after a Newcastle corner. That was well saved by Meslier, diving to his right. Raphinha worked his magic to get into the Newcastle area, but when he crossed to the middle, there was no team-mate to meet the pass.

A second half shot by Harrison was blocked by the heel of Fabian Schar. James could not get any power on his follow-up attempt. Sean Longstaff fired wide after 72 minutes when Wood teed him up after a good cross by Fraser. Manquillo was fouled just outside the Leeds box and Jonjo Shelvey scored direct from the 75th minute free kick with a shot that beat the wall and hit the net just inside Meslier’s left post. Meslier should have saved but might have been put off by the advancing Newcastle feet that he perhaps thought would divert the kick.

Llorente made a couple of vital defensive clearances. One was to rescue his goalkeeper who had let a short cross pass him. The second was to clear from the feet of Chris Wood. Newcastle finished the stronger of the two sides to hold on to their win.

Manchester United 1 West Ham United 0

Manchester United took West Ham’s place in the top four with a goal scored in the third minute of added time, allowed by VAR, when many thought an offside decision was warranted.

Harry Maguire returned to the United starting line-up in place of Lindelof, who was absent for family reasons. David Moyes gave Areola a start with Fabianski ruled out. Zouma returned in defence and Soucek was back in midfield.

It was 20 minutes before the first significant chance and that fell to Ronaldo who advanced in the middle but failed to meet Fernandes’ cross from the left with an intended header. Ronaldo’s pleas for a penalty when challenged by Zouma after 36 minutes fell on deaf ears.

Areola saved from Fred after another Fernandes ball fell to his feet four minutes into the second half. After a West Ham corner, a shot by Bowen from the edge of the box hit the back of the side netting. In a match of little incident so far Soucek’s header from an 87th minute Bowen corner passed wide across the goalmouth. De Gea was tested at his right-hand post by a deflected Declan Rice shot.

The winning goal followed a long ball forward met by Ronaldo who slipped it to substitute Cavani to his left. Cavani crossed into the 6-yard box where Rashford scored from close range. Cavani was the player who came under scrutiny by VAR, but the goal stood, much to the disdain of David Moyes. It was the last kick of the contest.

Southampton 1 Manchester City 1

Southampton made three changes with Stuart Armstrong, Che Adams and Kyle Walker-Peters all starting. City made just one change to the team that beat Chelsea last week. Ruben Dias came in for John Stones.

City came out of the blocks first, but they were surprised by a Kyle Walker-Peters right foot shot across Ederson and into the net! It was Kyle's first Premier League goal of his career. He was inside the area on the right and took Redmond's pass in his stride. (7 mins)

Broja took a pass from Romeu and hit the net with his shot after 22 minutes, but he had been offside. Southampton had been keeping City at bay effectively, but Grealish had a run down the left channel deep into the area. Forster cut out his cross conceding a corner.

Broja went down in the box under the challenge of Ederson, but there was an offside flag here to quash any hope of a penalty.

City passes were too often not finding their target, but after 34 minutes Sterling hit a left foot shot across Forster, but the ball passed over the bar. Sterling was free in the box three minutes later, receiving a pass from Foden, and should have scored, but hit his shot straight at the keeper.

Southampton held their lead at half-time. At the break Ralf Hasenhuttl replaced Redmond with Elyounoussi. "The Saints" had an early corner, delivered by Ward-Prowse, and met at the near post by Bednarek whose downward header was well saved by Ederson. Rodri had a shot at the other end, pushed around his left post by Forster.

Broja had another chance after 52 minutes as Southampton broke out. Armstrong delivered a pass inside a City defender and Broja was inside the area, but Laporte did just enough to give Southampton a corner. Following that, Broja hit the post with a header, and City managed to clear.

Foden took a pass but hit his volleyed shot straight at Forster. Rodri clipped the top of the bar with a shot from 22 yards. Pep Guardiola swapped Sterling for Gabriel Jesus.

Southampton had done so well, and to their credit had kept the usually influential Kevin De Bruyne quiet. However, in the 65th minute the Belgian International delivered an excellent free kick from the right and Laporte advanced from an onside position to head into the net. City turned the pressure levels higher and De Bruyne hit the post with a right foot shot from the edge of the area.

Cancelo crossed from inside the box on the left and Forster stood tall to block Jesus's header.

There was lengthy consideration by VAR of a possible penalty for a foul on Kevin de Bruyne, but the decision was "no penalty". VAR then looked at a high challenge by Armstrong on Laporte, but the yellow card shown by Simon Hooper was deemed to have been sufficient. Armstrong was shortly replaced by Diallo.

Southampton eased the pressure a little and Diallo had a shot on target, but this was picked up comfortably by Ederson. Grealish won a corner three minutes from time, and after this De Bruyne hit another shot from 22 yards. Forster was nowhere near as the ball whistled past his left post.

There were six minutes of added time. Salisu's name was being lauded by the home fans and he had been so strong at the back, making many clearances and interceptions.

Southampton held onto a point which had been so hard-earned.

Sunday 23rd January, 2022

Arsenal 0 Burnley 0

Despite dropping two points to bottom club Burnley the draw did take Arsenal above Spurs on goal difference. Spurs do have a game in hand though. Arsenal are out of all cup competitions in January for the first time since 1990. Arsenal had both Xhaka and Partey suspended. Aaron Lennon made his fourth Premier League start of the season for Burnley, who were playing their first league game since 2nd January.

Ramsdale was tested by a powerful McNeil cross hit from the left after 8 minutes. Ramsdale fumbled a McNeil corner after 17 minutes and was rescued by his defence. Pope saved a Smith-Rowe shot with his leg and a follow-up by Lacazette was blocked. Saka hit a shot wide across the Burnley goal in first half added time.

Saka was fouled just outside the area after 59 minutes, and Odegaard’s free kick dipped and landed on the net behind the bar. Pope made an excellent low right-handed save from Smith-Rowe’s shot with plenty of legs between the striker of the ball and the goalkeeper. Lacazette should have scored after Smith-Rowe made a great run and cut the ball back from the bye-line, but the Arsenal captain hit his shot wide of Pope’s left post with the goal beckoning.

McNeil had a chance in added time as Burnley countered from defence, but his shot was just over the bar.

Crystal Palace 1 Liverpool 3

Guaita was back in goal for Palace and their other change was Mateta for Eze. Alisson was back in goal for Liverpool who seem to have managed well in the absence of Salah and Mane in Africa.

Palace came under early pressure and Guaita was tested by a deflected Henderson shot after 6 minutes. Van Dijk headed the visitors into the lead in the eighth minute, getting a powerful connection on Robertson's corner. It was one-way traffic and Oxlade-Chamberlain hit the side netting when Robertson swung in another cross.

Palace managed to get higher up the pitch and when Ward crossed from the right, Mateta tested Alisson with a close range shot. The keeper saved well, but there was a probable offside by Palace.

Fabinho skied a shot from 17 yards after Firmino, then Jota passed the ball to the Liverpool midfielder after 24 minutes. Liverpool continued to dominate and went 2-0 up in the 32nd minute. Robertson got the assist again, crossing to Oxlade-Chamberlain beyond the back post, who had time to take a touch before scoring low past the keeper.

Olise had a chance after 38 minutes following a poor ball in the Liverpool half by Matip. Alisson came to his rescue with a save. Firmino made a poor pass in the middle and that led to a great chance for Mateta, whose shot passed wide across the Liverpool goal, although Alisson did get a touch to concede a corner.

Palace missed an excellent chance in the first minute of the second half when Olise crossed from the right and Gallagher didn't get enough contact. Olise crossed again and Schlupp returned the ball from short range to Edouard whose back-heel was well saved by Alisson. Liverpool were riding their luck.

After 52 minutes Oxlade-Chamberlain passed inside from the right and Henderson turned, putting a left-footed shot just outside Guaita’s right post. Palace did get a goal in the 55th minute. Schlupp fed Mateta on the right and he passed to Edouard to his left who had an easy finish. Palace’s tails were up! After Olise had been sent away down the right by a great long pass, the ball was only half-cleared and Andersen advanced, hitting a good shot just outside the post.

Minamino was inserted for Oxlade-Chamberlain. Eze replaced Edouard. After a Liverpool attack, Palace countered and Schlupp and Eze attacked in tandem with Schlupp hitting the side netting from a tight angle. Alisson came to Liverpool’s rescue again after Olise was onto a long Palace clearance lifting a shot which the Liverpool keeper managed to save. (82 mins)

There was a lengthy VAR review over a collision between Guaita and Jota after the ball had gone away from the Liverpool man but was still in play. Referee Kevin Friend was called to the monitor and a penalty was awarded. Fabinho took responsibility and scored. (89 minutes) The points were secured, and Liverpool gained a little ground on Manchester City.

Leicester City 1 Brighton & Hove Albion 1

Leicester were booed off by their fans after another disappointing result. However, Brighton are now unbeaten in 6 league games and deserve credit. After all, they are four points above "The Foxes" Graham Potter was absent due to having had a positive Covid test.

Maddison had a close range shot saved by Sanchez after three minutes. Lookman had a shot saved later in the first half after Mac Allister had lost the ball in midfield. Daka gave the home side the lead in the first minute of the second half. Dewsbury-Hall had headed the ball towards the Brighton area and after touches by Barnes, Maddison (twice) and Lookman, Daka stabbed the ball home from outside the keeper’s right post.

Lamptey and Welbeck came off the Brighton bench after 62 minutes. The two subs soon combined with Lamptey crossing and Welbeck heading towards goal, only for Schmeichel to make a very good save low to his left. Welbeck did score with a powerful header in the 82nd minute. Lamptey had won possession at the start of a move which then involved Trossard and Maupay, who delivered the cross to the back post. Brighton have a habit of scoring late goals.

Brighton might even have had a winner following a corner, headed goalward by Burn, only for Tielemans to head off the line. March found Trossard and Schmeichel was needed to make another great save from the shot.

Chelsea 2 Spurs 0

The least said, the better, regarding another defeat against Chelsea. Hugo Lloris and Harry Kane shared your Spurs' man of the match vote.

There were plenty of comments offered, amongst which were these:-

"Tanganga must be one of the most courageous players in the Premiership, and he might make a good centre-back. Unfortunately Hudson-Odoi had him on toast yesterday. I thought Conte would sub him at HT, particularly as he had been booked."

"3 central defenders, 4 fullbacks.... looked like we tried to play for a draw. Too many years buying average players, Conte can´t make a silk purse from a sow´s ear, Levy and Lewis now have to step up to the plate."

"Thank God we can't play Chelsea again. Oops - what about the FA Cup ? Never mind, Brighton will probably see to us at that."
