History is still possible!
In last month's review I wrote:- "Let's hope that when we review April, we still have a chance of Champions League football next season, and who knows, maybe we will still be in this year's competition!"
Here we are then with three games to play in May. We've won three and lost two of our league games this month, but those below us, also fighting for a top four place, have done worse and we still hold third place, with one win from our two remaining league games required to ensure Champions League football next season.
The most memorable game this month, and surely for years, was one that we lost - 4-3 at Manchester City - but because of the wonderful away goals rule, we qualified for our first Champions League semi-final against Ajax. We lost at home on Tuesday night, but unlike Liverpool who lost 3-0 last night in Barcelona, we do have a realistic chance of overcoming our deficit, especially with the return of Son Heung-min in next Wednesday's game in Amsterdam. We could yet be making history by playing our first ever competitive game in the month of June in the Champions League Final in Madrid. Just take a moment to read that last sentence again. History is still possible for Spurs!
History has already been made of course. We played our first competitive game in our marvellous new stadium, and won that, and our first Champions League game in our new home. Son made personal history by scoring the first goal against Palace and the only goal at home to City too. He even got two early goals at the Etihad in the away leg, and it is no wonder we missed him through suspension against Ajax on Tuesday. 44 of our 98 goals this season have been scored by the injured Kane - and Son. Imagine Liverpool without Salah and Mane!
Apart from Kane (who was injured in the home game against City), we've missed one or more of our first choice midfielders in every game. Wanyama has been involved in every game. We've had no senior alternative at right back to Kieran Trippier, who by his own admission has not enjoyed the best of form this season. Fernando Llorente has made three starts this month - and did score the vital third goal at the Etihad. Lucas Moura has been imvolved in every game and made his own history with the first hat-trick at new White Hart Lane against Huddersfield.
Perhaps most of all, we missed Moussa Sissoko for three full games and at the end of the City away Champions League game. Moussa, who in the eyes of many is a contender for player of the season, was able to come off the bench against Ajax and made an immense difference with his power and drive. Who, at the start of this season, would have imagined what an important part of our team Moussa has become? Sissoko (should we call him "The Tank") is our player of the month.
If we exclude Paulo Gazzaniga, who has played just 11 games this season, Jan Vertonghen leads the accumulating Spurs Odyssey player of the season poll again. Jan won last year, but he too is now injured having had to leave the field in the Ajax game with a worrying head injury. Jan is still being assessed regarding availabilty for our remaining games, but will surely have to sit out Saturday's game at Bournemouth.
I'll repeat the headline - History is still possible for Spurs!
