August 2013
So nearly an august August
Yes, it was so close to being a venerable start to the season, and to new head coach Mauricio Pochettino's Spurs' career, until we were brought back to earth with a heavy thump on Sunday, when we lost our first game of the season, and at a stroke, reduced our positive goal difference from five to two.
Until Sunday, Pochettino had enjoyed something of a dream start to the season, with four successive wins in the Premier League, and our Europa League qualifiers. That matched Andre Villas-Boas's start to last season, with four wins out of four. Perhaps we should focus only on the positive.
The most memorable moment of the month was surely provided by new boy Eric Dier's 93rd minute winner at Upton Park on the opening day of the season. Dier has had an excellent start and only enhanced his already high reputation with a stinging tackle on Liverpool's Mario Balotelli last Sunday. He also scored a great headed goal against QPR, and is our level top scorer with Harry Kane and Nacer Chadli. With the news that Kyle Walker has had to have an operation, it looks as if Dier will be required at right back for a while to come, with Kyle Naughton also in the frame for that position.
Spurs topped the league after two games, and were there for the first time in four years. Harry Redknapp took us to the top then, and it was the 4-0 drubbing of his QPR team that put us on the pedestal, albeit briefly. We are unlikely to be up there again this season.
Redknapp will be buoyed by the signing of "The Beast" Sandro, about which I wrote in this piece - A beating heart is hard to replace . With Caulker, Jenas, Taarabt and Zamora also in the QPR squad, there are plenty of Spurs connections to be found.
Another club with several Spurs connections is, of course, Hull, who signed our own Michael Dawson, and who already have Tom Huddlestone and Jake Livermore.
Apart from Eric Dier, our other arrivals were Ben Davies and Michel Vorm from Swansea, DeAndre Yedline from Seattle Sounders (he won't come to Tottenham till next year), Federico Fazio from Sevilla and Benjamin Stambouli from Montpelier.
Dier and Davies are the only two we've seen as yet. Michel Vorm has now been named in the squad for the Europa League Group stage. By now he has surely reached the level of fitness required for Pochettino, but of course Hugo Lloris is very difficult to displace. Brad Friedel has not been named in the Europa League squad, but remains in the squad named for the Premier League.
We can surely look forward to seeing Fazio and Stambouli in the first two domestic games after the International break.
Both Danny Rose and Andros Townsend were selected for the England squad for the games against Norway and Switzerland, but neither are first choice for Roy Hodgson's team. In fact neither got on the pitch for the Norway friendly. Townsend in paricular has some ground to recover following the form displayed against Liverpool.
Hugo LLoris is the Spurs Odyssey player of the month, but Dier was only marginally behind.
