Son shone in December!
Spurs' South Korean star Son Heung-min capped his Premier League goal of the month award for November (his goal against Chelsea) with the Spurs Odyssey Player of the Month award for December. Our "Sonny" took part in all 9 of our games in a hectic schedule this month, and scored no less than 7 goals. Those goals were scored in 5 of the games, and more than once of stunning quality!
After our January 13th game against a rejuvenated Manchester United, Son will be away to join his country on International duty and will be sorely missed, especially for the second leg of our Carabao Cup semi-final against Chelsea. Another busy month is ahead of us, and we need our injured players to return to bring our squad back to strength from its current depleted state. In his New Year's Eve blog, Norman Giller tells us that "I am assured by somebody closer to the club than me that two major purchases are close to completion." We must all hope that he is right. It is unusual for Norman to get involved in the usual transfer melee of gossip.
The month was bookended by truly disappointing defeats. The first was away to Arsenal, after being 2-1 up at half-time. The last was hopefully a blip at home to Wolves. We led that game at half-time too. In between we won 6 games, two of them by spectacular scorelines, and one of them gave us revenge against the "Gooners" in the Carabao Cup. That was sweet!
Arguably the most important result of the month was not even a victory, but a massive draw in Barcelona, giving us passage to the Champions League Round of 16 against Borussia Dortmund in February and March. We know our way there!
It's been a good month for Harry Kane too. Awarded an MBE in the New Year's Honours list for his World Cup achievements with England, Harry has added 6 goals to his Premier League tally, making that 121 Premier League and 157 club goals, which puts him just two goals behind fourth-placed Cliff Jones in our all-time goalscorers' list. Cliff will be the first to congratulate Harry, as he heads forward to reach Martin Chivers' 174 goal third-place. Harry's goal against Wolves was truly one of his best too, but sadly not reflected by the overall team performance and result.
18 year old Oliver Skipp made a first Premier League start against Burnley and has been gently eased into the routine of first team participation. He hasn't let his side down either, and is clearly a great prospect. Kyle Walker-Peters made his first Premier League start of this season against Bournemouth and chipped in with three assists.
It has been a taxing month for some of the experienced players with Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen, Son and Moussa Sissoko involved in all 9 games. Harry and Christian made 2 substitute appearances, whilst Moussa and Son started 8 and came off the bench for one game. Hugo Lloris and Toby Alderweireld played 8 of our 9 games. Eriksen and Dele chipped in with three goals apiece, as did Lucas Moura. Dele's goal against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup was arguably goal of the month, whilst Lucas Moura's goal in the Camp Nou was clearly the most important!
Despite those defeats at either end of the month, a lot has been achieved. We are still in third place and now seven points ahead of Arsenal in fifth place. we are 9 points behind league leaders Liverpool and that's a lot of ground to make up, but we have plenty to look forward to in 2019. Happy New Year!
