Spurs have made slight progress with their performances in the second month of the season, but this is largely down to the 6-1 win over Anorthosis Famagusta from Cyprus, who we meet for the second leg of the UEFA Cup next Thursday. A decent show against Middlesbrough in the Carling Cup has also boosted the figures, which have not been helped by our two draws and that home defeat against Arsenal in the Premier League fixtures.
Thus Spurs find themselves in the bottom three, and with difficult journeys to Liverpool and Newcastle to come in October, coupled with stiff home matches against Villa and Blackburn, we might have to wait a considerable time before seeing our team in a decent position in the League Table.
There will be 7 games in October - assuming we do not lose our five-goal lead in Cyprus! In addition to the Premier League, we will face our first opponents in the EUFA Cup mini-league and on Halloween (to be confirmed), we will play the 4th Round Carling Cup game.
Martin Jol will be grateful for the availability if not the fitness of most of the squad. I am being careful to emphasis the difference as during the opening part of the season there have been criticisms levelled at Spurs over the physical fitness of the players.
There is no question about the fitness levels of 18 year old Gareth Bale, who is without doubt the Player of the Month for September. Bale made his impressive debut in August at Old Trafford, and in 4 more appearances this month (one as substitute) has continued to shine, scoring three goals in the process, which makes him the current club top scorer! Bale scored 5 league goals in 38 league games for Southampton last season, so he is already on target to beat his own record in his so youthful career.
Each of Bale's goals have been of quality. The memorable free kick against Arsenal was sadly lost in the fog of anger over another home defeat against our enemies, but his energy and running power enabled him to be on hand to score at Craven Cottage and then on Wednesday night against Middlesbrough, when he played at left back for the first time in an official game for Spurs!
We have had the Defoe debate of course, and his exciting goals against the Cypriot side brought us all to our feet in admiration. Whilst Defoe gets little chance to show what he can do, all three other strikers have struggled to find their best form, with Bent not yet full of confidence, Berbatov not looking as impressive as last season (yet), and Robbie Keane often being directed to play deep in support of the midfield.
We must all hope that October starts with a good win on our 125th birthday against Aston Villa on Monday night!
