How the not so mighty fall

Spurs’ world was devastated in September when the passing of a genuine footballing legend – Jimmy Greaves – was announced. As regular readers know, Jimmy will always be my all-time footballing and sports icon.

A lesser, but ongoing concern is the grave dip in form and results for Spurs in September. The Premier League’s manager of the month for August was our own Nuno Esperito Santo. The “curse of the award” rose again and Nuno’s form and that of his team was diametrically opposite in September to that of August. After winning our first three games, we lost all three played this month. It is distressing to note that these defeats were all in London Derby matches and of course the last was a meek surrender at The Emirates. Arsenal rarely lose convincingly to Tottenham, whereas all too often, we lose badly at their place. Two consecutive 5-2 defeats and a 4-2 in recent years come to mind. The whole psyche of Spurs away to Arsenal has to change.

Japhet Tanganga was the Spurs Odyssey player of the month for August, but his assessments, like most of those who have represented Spurs in league games, have deteriorated severely. The only player whose overall grades for September crept over 6 (out of 10) was Cristian Romero. That was because he avoided involvement in our three league defeats. Of those who did play all three league games, Hugo Lloris and Oliver Skipp (both with 5.8) came closest to what might be considered a “par” score of 6 out of 10. Hugo leads the rankings overall after two months.

The team dropped from top of the table to eleventh. Son’s goal away to Arsenal was our only league goal this month. “Sonny” has three goals to his name so far this season. Harry Kane has six, but he has yet to get off the mark in the Premier League. Here’s hoping he does that tomorrow against Villa!

I am afraid that currently, you will have more fun checking out casino genie here, than watching Spurs, despite the fact we continue to make progress in the Carabao Cup and the Europa Conference League.
