Stalteri out - Finnan in?
Spurs Odyssey understands that with effect from January, Canadian right back Paul Stalteri will leave Tottenham by mutual consent. Stalteri's contract was due to expire next summer anyway.
Signed in the summer of 2005 from Werder Bremen, Stalteri played most of his games for Tottenham in that first season. His appearances were limited over the next two seasons, during which he spent several months on loan at Fulham, playing a full part in their successful fight against relegation last season.
Stalteri's most memorable moment as a Spurs player must surely have been as the scorer of the winning goal in added time at West Ham on 4th March, 2007 in the memorable 4-3 win.
Stalteri was one of those who Juande Ramos refused to even grant a squad number this season. This situation was rectified by Harry Redknapp, but Stalts has still not figured for Spurs this season.
Stalteri, aged 31, is still playing for Canada, and has been the International Captain in recent years.
Spurs Odyssey also understands that former Fulham and Liverpool right back, Steve Finnan, who left Anfield this summer, will be attending Spurs Lodge early in the New Year for a medical. Finnan was signed from Liverpool by Spanish side Espanyol, but has only figured in 4 games, and played 90 minutes twice.
Ironically, Finnan is slightly older than Stalteri, but he does have plenty of pace and Premier League expertise and experience. Finnan renounced his International career earlier in the year, but was persuaded to play for the Republic of Ireland again, when Giovanni Trapattoni took over the reigns.
Despite Alan Hutton being out for the season, Finnan might still struggle to hold down a regular place with Vedran Coruluka doing an excellent job in the position and Chris Gunter also playing well. However, Spurs are still competing in 4 competitions, and Finnan would be a very useful acquisition.
We'll be sure to report as and when the medical is held and the signing confirmed.
